MANILA -- Lawyer Raymond Fortun on Monday night set the record straight on why he resigned as spokesman of businessman Cedric Lee in the mauling case involving actor Vhong Navarro.

Fortun said as the spokesman of Lee, his job was merely to educate the public on the rights of the accused. But after 12 days, he said he just simply couldn't do the work anymore.

"The job given to me as a spokesman was merely to educate the public on rights of the accused, the right to counsel the right to be confronted with the witnesses in the proper legal setting. Ang nangyari nung nagdesisyon ako nito, I just simply couldn't do the work, and when the time comes you just say that you can't," Fortun said in an interview on "Abunda & Aquino Tonight" on Monday.

In an earlier letter to Lee, Fortun said the agreement between him and the businessman's group, which was to not make statements without the approval of their counsels and spokesman, was breached.

"The bottom line always is pag meron ka nang spokesman you allow your spokesman to do all the talking for you. As any counsel would say, less talk less mistake," he said.

The lawyer said the breach of the agreement is just one reason why he resigned, adding that the main reason is he found the mandate given to him "too much."

"After the 12 days I have been acting as a spokesman dun ko na-realize na yung mandate na ibinigay sa akin was just too much," he said.

Meanwhile, when asked to comment on case of Lee's group, particularly on Cornejo's rape claim, Fortun kept at a distance.

"Pagdating sa any matter involving the case, I leave that to the lawyers. It is not my role," he said.

Asked if he lost faith on Lee and Deniece Cornejo, Fortun said: "Not in them, but in my ability to help them."
