MANILA, Philippines – The long-time love team of Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta encouraged the current generation of romantic tandems to pursue individual growth as actors.

Gomez, who recently “resumed” his team-up with ex-girlfriend Dawn Zulueta on ABS-CBN’s “Walang Hanggan,” advised love teams of this generation to be “real” not only to their fans, but also to themselves as individuals.

“Kung minsan meron kayong trabaho na akala mo baduy, pampakilig sa mga tao, but you know, if it makes people feel good then do it, do it for them,” Gomez said in an interview on ABS-CBN documentary “Patrol ng Pilipino.”

“But you have to be your real self. ‘Di mo rin syempre pwede kalimutan 'yung sarili mo, who you are and what you are as a person,” he said.

Zulueta also urged the younger love teams to keep on improving their craft so they can stand on their own as individual actors.

“As an artist, you stand individually pa rin. You have to continue honing your craft and making better your performances even as an individual,” she said. “Para kahit na hindi na masigla ‘yung love team ninyo, ang sarili mong star, ang sarili mong legacy, will continue.”

In they heyday, Gomez and Zuluet were halves of a popular love team that eventually bloomed into a serious relationship – a circumstance that is more an expection than a norm, Zulueta said.

“The only love team I’ve experienced is the one with my real-life boyfriend then, si Richard. Which really only happened naturally because we did a movie together, we got to know each other, we fell in love,” she said. “Nagkataon nagustuhan rin kami ng tao on screen together, so if there’s something like that that happens, it’s only probably once in a blue moon.”

Twenty years since, Gomez is pleased that some aspects of the love team landscape have changed.

“At that time masyadong seloso ‘yung mga fans. Ayaw nilang 'yung lalaki may ibang girlfriend, o 'yung babae may ibang boyfriend, or ayaw nila ‘yung lalaki mayroong anak," Gomez said.

“Sa present time it doesn’t really matter, especially pag ‘yung lalaki may anak siya, walang pakialam ‘yung fans. Ang importante ‘yung partnership ng dalwang artista on screen,” he said.

The reunion of Gomez and Zulueta on “Walang Hanggan” is a testament to this new temperament towards love teams.

“I’m surprised na after 20 years, the people are still interested sa partnership namin ni Dawn,” Gomez said.

"Walang Hanggan" airs weeknights on ABS-CBN.
