MANILA, Philippines – The “American Idol” judges were not impressed with the performance of Filipino-American singer Adriana Latonio on Wednesday morning (Manila time).
Singing for America’s votes to make it through the Top 10, Latonio performed her own rendition of Destiny’s Child’s “Stand Up For Love,” which the judges found “pageanty.”
Keith Urban thought Latonio made the wrong song choice because it did not showcase her powerful voice.
“I’m a little nervous about that song choice for you tonight because in the midst of everything that we’ve been hearing tonight and just the level that everything is at, I’m a little worried that wasn’t the best song choice for you,” he said.
Nicki Minaj agreed with Urban, saying Latonio should just come back next season.
“After Angie, Amber and Kree, I would suggest that you work a little bit and come back next year. It just really didn’t stand out. I think the song was too big for you,” she said.
Minaj said the 17-year old singer was not able to connect with the song and she saw no emotion.
“It was real pageanty. But you have a strong voice and I think it’s just gonna take a little bit more experience and then come back in here and own it,” she said.
Randy Jackson, for his part, said he found Latonio’s performance “very safe” and “kind of boring.”
“Everything is in this kind of thing and you just have to come in and slay it. That didn’t happen. It was kind of boring really,” he said.
Mariah Carey, meanwhile, is hoping that American viewers were able to watch Latonio’s previous performances to send her through the next round.
“I really enjoyed your last performance... We’re used to hearing a little more of a soulful moment from you that’s less produced and what not arrangement-wise. Anyway, I still enjoy your voice and I hope everybody saw your previous performances. Keep it going,” she said.
During the Sudden Death round two weeks ago, Latonio performed Aretha’s Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way” for her solo performance, which brought the judges and the audience to their feet.
Voting
After the performances of the Top 10 girls, America will be voting for their Top 5 female “American Idol” bets.
The results will be announced live on Friday morning (Manila time).
Despite the judges’ review of Latonio’s performance, the Alaskan teenager is currently at the top spot of Dial Idol, a website which predicts who has the most number of phone votes based on its margin of error.
American viewers could vote for Latonio by calling the numbers 1-866-436-5709.
