Comedian Subas Herrero dies
MANILA, Philippines - (2nd UPDATE) Comedian Subas Herrero passed away in Rochester, New York on Friday (Manila time). He was 69.
Singer-comedian Mitch Valdes said she got a text message from musician John Lesaca, who got the sad news from Herrero's wife Maripaz.
The message read: "Our dear friend Subas passed away March 14 of cardiac arrest due to 4 days of double pneumonia. Pls say a prayer for our dear friend. He will always be remembered for his talents and his great attitude on life summed up as his regular yell: I LOVE THIS GAME!"
Comedian Noel Trinidad, meanwhile, said he got a call from Maripaz, who confirmed Herrero's death.
Trinidad said his friend had several strokes before and was diabetic, adding that the comedian would've turned 70 on April 3.
Herrero is survived by Maripaz and their children Sandra, Inez, Cutuy, Marimi and Choy.
Herrero's daughter, Cutuy, also posted in her Facebook page that her father, whose real name is Ricardo Wright Herrero, passed away peacefully Thursday.
His daughter told Balitang America that Herrero's wake and interment will be announced soon.
Considered an ace comedian in Philippine showbiz, Herrero rose to fame for his shows "Baltic and Co." and "Champoy" with Trinidad and Valdes.
He was also known as a great actor in television, movies and theater.
Herrero retired from the industry years ago after he suffered a stroke.
Friends mourn Herrero's death
Herrero's celebrity and non-showbiz friends took to social networking sites to mourn the death of the ace comedian.
"Rest in peace Tito Subas. Thank you for the laughs on Champoy, for playing my father in Fair Lady and for just being a great guy," singer-actress Lea Salonga said in a Facebook post.
"Saddened by the news of the passing of Subas Herrero, the other half of the iconic CHAMPOY, one of the gems of Philippine TV Comedy," director Joey Reyes said on Twitter.
"Just heard the sad news that old friend and former talent I represented in the 80s Subas Herrero has passed away in New York. He leaves his loving wife Maripaz and 4 daughters. He gave us a lot of joy as half of Champoy. Rest in peace Subas," said Herrero's friend GR Rodis.
"RIP Tito Subas Herrero. Praying for your family and loved ones. Many thanks for your grace, laughter and huge heart :)," actress Pinky Amador said in a Twitter post.
