Only moments after she opened her new account on micro-blogging site Twitter (@JustSarahG) early this week, the 24-year-old singer-actress said she already received tweets from "bashers," among them one where she is referred to as "fake."
"May nag-bash na kasi kaagad noong nag-open ako ng account," she said in an interview with ABS-CBN News on Thursday, shortly after a bloggers' conference for her upcoming film with actor John Lloyd Cruz, "It Takes a Man and a Woman."
"Sabi, ang-peke ko daw, kailangan ko lang daw ang mga tao to promote the movie, which is true. Kailangan ko talaga ang suporta ng mga tao para dito sa pelikulang ito," she said.
Directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, "It Takes a Man and a Woman" is the final installment in the series of films chronicling the love story of Miggy (Cruz) and Laida (Geronimo). It will hit theaters nationwide on March 30.
In handling negative comments on social media, Geronimo said she was given advice by host-actress KC Concepcion, herself a Twitter user with millions of followers.
"Sabi niya, 'Magalit ka sa mga taong kilala mo na bina-bash ka, hindi roon sa mga taong hindi ka kilala na dyina-judge ka na 'di nila alam kung sino ka talaga, kung anong dahilan mo kung bakit mo ginagawa ang isang bagay,'" Geronimo said.
The singer, dubbed the country's "Pop Star Princess," first joined Twitter in April 2010 with the handle @SGeronimo25, which she has since left unused.
Asked why she decided to join Twitter anew, Geronimo said she hopes to communicate with her fans and invite them to support her projects.
"[Gusto ko] maka-connect sa mga supporters. Sa lahat ng ginagawa ko, tulad ng pelikula ko with John Lloyd, gusto ko talaga gamitin 'yung Twitter para maimbitihan 'yung mga tao," she said.
She said joining social media is also her way of reaching Filipinos who are based overseas.
"Kasi ang Twitterworld, worldwide 'yan. 'Yung mga kababayan natin sa ibang sulok ng mundo, gusto ko ma-inform sila na may pelikula kaming ino-offer sa inyo," she said.
Geronimo is cautious, however, not to share personal or intimate details about her everyday life on the micro-blogging platform.
"Hindi ko naman mapa-promise na gagawin ko na 'to araw-araw, kasi syempre hangga't maaari sana gusto ko private," she said.
"Pero ise-share natin sa mga tao kung ano 'yung dapat i-share. Gamitin natin sa tamang paraan," she said.
