'Booba' star Rufa Mae Quinto wants a 're-launch'
MANILA, Philippines -- Rufa Mae Quinto, who is popular for her onscreen "dumb blonde" persona Booba, is looking to turn a page as an actress by starring in what she calls a "re-launching film."
This time, the 34-year-old sexy comedienne is hoping to project a more serious image by playing more "intelligent" role in an action film.
Quinto will take on her first big-screen lead role in nine years in "Miri: Ang Huling Henya," local film production company Viva Films announced early this week.
In the action flick directed by Marlon Rivera, who is behind the indie hit "Ang Babae sa Septic Tank," Quinto portrays an agent who will nonetheless have a touch of the sexy humor that has been identified with the comedienne.
“Kailangan talaga kasi ibang Rufa Mae ang mapapanood nila. Medyo serious ako dito. Medyo lang, ah. Hindi na 'yung usual na Booba character pero may touch pa rin ng comedy," said Quinto, whose last starring role in a film was in "Masikip sa Dibdib" in 2004.
To transition from her "Booba" image to an action star, Quinto said she has had to go through rigorous training in preparation for the physically demanding scenes in "Miri."
"Kailangan fit tayo dahil nga sa mga fight scenes. Kaya sobra ang training ko, boxing, Muay Thai, at pati firing," she was quoted as saying by Viva Films in a report on its official website.
According to the film arm of Viva Entertainment, "Miri: Ang Huling Henya" is scheduled to hit theaters in May.
