MANILA - Vice Ganda wished for a "better year" for the hosts of ABS-CBN's noontime program "It's Showtime" during the comedian's special birthday celebration on Saturday.

Speaking after his opening production number, the 38-year-old comedian turned emotional when he gave his birthday speech, where Vice Ganda alluded to the several controversies involving the program's co-hosts.

Not a good year

Aside from the most recent and highly controversial mauling incident involving co-host and actor Vhong Navarro, the past year has not been a kind one for the hosts of the noontime program.

Navarro, who had to undergo surgery, claimed to have been a victim of extortion and that he was attacked inside a condominium unit in Taguig by at least six men led by businessman Cedric Lee and model Deniece Cornejo.

Cornejo, in her counter-affidavit, maintained that the actor attempted to rape her inside the unit and she was rescued by Lee's group, who supposedly carried out a citizen's arrest on Navarro last January 22.

Actress Anne Curtis, who currently stars in ABS-CBN's fantasy series "Dyesebel," caught the ire of several critics and detractors when she was reported to have slapped three people, including actor John Lloyd Cruz, at a bar last November 2013.

She was also reported to have taunted the rumored boyfriend of her sister Jasmine Curtis-Smith during the birthday party of Vice Ganda on March 31. Curtis was also rushed to a hospital recently, after a box jellyfish stung the actress during a shoot for "Dyesebel."

Vice Ganda also had his share of the headlines after the comedian poked fun at GMA News anchor Jessica Soho during his concert at the Araneta Coliseum last May 17. He was also involved in a reported rift with singer Yael Yuzon, husband of co-host Karylle.

Several of the program's mainstays went through controversies of their own, including a tax evasion case filed against former "Pinoy Big Brother" contestant Ryan Bang, a viral photo that appeared to show the tip of Jhong Hilario's penis, Kuya Kim's illness, and the infamous rumored relationship of actor Billy Crawford and commercial model Coleen Garcia.

One more wish

Vice Ganda, during the episode, also wished to become an inspiration for the local LGBT community. He explained that gender should not be limited to whatever is written on a document and urged others to come out and make a difference.

Para sa ating lahat 'to," he said.
