Sam Concepcion talks about first big-screen kiss
MANILA, Philippines – Actor-singer Sam Concepcion thought his first kissing scene would be “really awkward,” but said being good friends with his on-screen partner helped him get through the initial awkwardness.
Concepcion is set to star in the musical comedy film “I Do Bidoo Bidoo,” where he will star alongside Eugene Domingo, Ogie Alcasid, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Gary Valenciano, and his long-time friend and theater colleague Tippy Dos Santos.
Speaking to Push.com.ph, Concepcion said Dos Santos’ character will get pregnant at the age of 21, which serves as a jumping point for the full-blown musical spectacle featuring the greatest hits of Apo Hiking Society.
“I come from a middle-class family. My dad’s a musician and one hit wonder lang. His girlfriend Tippy (Dos Santos) is very rich, and the daughter of Gary Valenciano and Zsa Zsa Padilla,” he said.
“It’s [about the struggles] between two families to get along and these two 21-year-olds to get married. It’s really funny. The songs there are all Apo [Hiking]. It’s something everyone would enjoy.”
On portraying a close relationship with Dos Santos, Concepcion said it felt natural since they have been friends for a long time. Their first on-screen kiss, however, was a different matter altogether. Concepcion shared they got over the awkwardness by laughing it off.
“I’ve known Tippy since I was little. We worked with each other for a while and then we have to do this kissing scene. Actually, it's kind of weird because we had to deliver scenes wherein the people would see us together and we have to act really in love,” he said.
“But after the first day, I realized that it's not so bad. Because we did it in different angles over and over, I thought it’s going to be really awkward.
“First thing I told her, ‘I have cherry, strawberry or apple ChapStick, what flavor do you like?’ I was laughing afterwards. That’s how I dealt with it. I thought it would break the ice. I think it did help naman na she's my friend. I thought it’s going to be, but it wasn’t such a big deal.”
Concepcion also said he is excited for what he refers to as his biggest film project thus far. “I Do Bidoo Bidoo” is directed by Chris Martinez under Straight Shooters Media.
