MANILA, Philippines – Gretchen Barretto has admitted that she and her youngest sister, Claudine Barretto, are not on speaking terms again.
In her taped interview with “The Buzz” aired Sunday, Gretchen finally opened up about her and Claudine’s latest misunderstanding. In 2005, the 2 siblings were involved in a major fight. They kissed and made up only in 2007.
Her admission came after the elder Barretto’s much publicized walkout last week.
A teary eyed Gretchen hurriedly left her own press conference after entertainment reporters asked her to comment on speculations that she was being pitted against her sister, a former talent of the Kapamilya network.
The entertainment press pointed out that Gretchen’s much-awaited “Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK)” episode would be aired the same timeslot as that of the launching of Claudine’s own drama anthology series in a rival network.
The MMK episode was shown on April 10.
Gretchen reiterated that she was not aware that her MMK episode would be aired simultaneously with Claudine’s TV show.
“Originally, before Holy Week ilalalabas ang episode ko. Ang nangyari lang hindi talaga kami natapos. Sabi nila ang showing right after Holy Week. Hindi ko naman alam na may show siya. Hindi ko naman alam na ikakasama niya ng loob.
“Totoo. Hindi kami nag-uusap ni Claudine at hindi ko talaga maintindihan kung bakit talaga at kung ano ang nangyari,” she said.
Citing a source, “The Buzz” reported that their last conversation was in November 2009 before the awarding ceremony of Star Awards for TV where Gretchen was nominated.
Gretchen said: “Nagkita kami sa isang family gathering and then sabi niya, ‘I’ll pray for you.’ And I really felt so good kasi alam niya Star Awards nga ito tapos nominated ako. So, nagdasal siya. I felt so good. She was crying while she prayed. And I really felt so close to her.”
"The Buzz" reported that there was no communication between them since then.
On March 5, or the day before her birthday, Gretchen revealed that she invited Claudine to her private birthday party. Gretchen said she did not hear from her sister.
Gretchen said she persisted on her birthday. “Tinext ko na siya, tinawagan ko siya. Sabi ko hangga’t hindi n'ya sagutin hindi ako titigil. Kasi gusto ko talagang malaman. I felt sad on my birthday, na parang my kulang.
“Tinawagan ko siya and then sabi niya sa akin, ‘I’ll call you back. I’m in a show.’ Nag-return call siya. Sabi ko, ‘Babe, what happened to us?’…. And sabi niya, ‘Yeah, we really have to talk kasi marami akong gustong ilabas.’ Basta hindi maganda ‘yong nangyari. Nagalit siya,” Gretchen said.
During her press conference last week, she said she was shocked to learn that their fight got leaked to the media.
“’Yong naging masakit talaga sa akin, kung kaya ako tumayo, ‘yong sabi ng isang reporter, ‘Sabi daw ni Claudine galit na galit ‘yong buong pamilya sa’yo. Galit ‘yong mommy at daddy mo sa’yo dahil hinahayaan mong pagsabungin kaming 2.’
“Tinawagan ko ‘yong kuya ko. Tinanong ko kung totoo…. [Sabi niya], ‘Dad is very proud of you. Everybody is so proud. At hindi mo naman kasalanan. Wala kaming sinasabing galit kami sa’yo.’ After that, I felt better,” she said.
Gretchen said it was never her intention to hurt Claudine, adding that she understands, loves and respects her youngest sister.
“Nami-miss ko siya. Gusto kong sabihin sa kanya na nage-enjoy ako sa ginagawa ko at wala akong intensyon na saktan siya. Alam kong mahal ako ni Claudine…. siguro we just need space, we need time,” she said.
She added: “Inaayos namin. Nakausap ko na ang kapatid ko na kailangang mag-usap lahat, huwag palakihin.”
