MANILA, Philippines -- Azkals player and Golden Boot awardee Phil Younghusband said his relationship with actress Angel Locsin has made him more confident as a person and as a professional football player.

"[Because of Angel,] I've become more confident at mas masaya ngayon. I think we're very supportive of each other, and I think when you're happy in your personal life, often you're also happy in your career," Younghusband said on Friday in an interview on "Bandila."

"I think she's doing very well at the moment, and me with the Azkals, personally I think I'm doing very well at the moment. So I think it all rubs off."

While they have yet to confirm their status as an official couple, Younghusband and Locsin have been vocal about their feelings for each other.

“Still no status. Because right now, why change something when it's not broken? Everything's happy. Everything’s going well. There's no need to change anything. As we’ve been before, we're still happy,” Younghusband told Push.com.ph.

Locsin, for her part, earlier described their relationship simply as "two people in love."

Defensive

To this end, Locsin has shown support for Younghusband by rallying behind the Philippine Azkals not only during their football games but also in times of intrigues and controversies.

“Angel’s amazing. She will fight for everyone she loves. That’s the person she is. I feel very happy, blessed, and privileged to have someone like Angel,” Younghusband said on Friday during an ad campaign launch of a chocolate brand.

He is referring to the incident involving fellow Azkals players Alex Guirado and Lexton Moy being charged with a sexual harrassment complaint.

“[Angel] defended not just me, but she defended the team. She defended everyone involved. That’s how she is supportive of the team. So it’s great to have her around,” Younghusband added.

Acting

Locsin was also around to support Younghusband for his acting debut on weekend sitcom “Toda Max.”

On his first acting role, the famed football player said his experience made him respect Locsin even more for her craft.

“I think mas kumportable ako sa loob ng field. It’s more difficult to act," he said.

“I admire even more the talent of actors. I admire Angel before. But to see all these things that she goes through, I really admire her, especially after winning all those awards. So I’m really, really proud of her."

‘Still coping’

Since they started dating early last year, Locsin has seen the struggles and triumphs of her rumored boyfriend in his professional and personal life. Most notably, Locsin was also at Younghusband's side when his mother died in September last year.

On his mother's passing, which happened four years after his father died, Younghusband said he and his siblings are still coping with their loss.

"Honestly, always, everyday, I pray to my mom and dad, and I'm always crying. I can't remember the last time [I cried]," Younghusband said on "Bandila."

"We're  still coping. We still miss our mom and dad, but we have to cope and be strong for our sister."
