MANILA – Prior to his big break in show business, Kapamilya actor Richard Yap admitted he is not the type of person who watches local soap operas.

In an interview with Cheche Lazaro for the TV special “Si Sir Chief, Si Maya at ang Teleserye,” Yap revealed what he initially thought of teleseryes that have been part of the Filipino culture for 60 years now.

“I thought that they were all the same. They were eating, they were slapping each other, they were crying, kidnapping, gunfights. Everything was almost all the same,” he said.

Thus, he finds it a little funny that he took on acting as his full-time career.

Although it was a hard decision for Yap to quit the company where he worked for 22 years, the actor said he wanted to try his luck in showbiz. Yap rose to fame after he played Papa Chen in the ABS-CBN series “My Binondo Girl” in 2011.

But it was his role of Sir Chief in the top-rating morning series “Be Careful With My Heart” that made him a household name.

Yap said up to this day, he still marvels at the success of the daytime series.

Insisting he and his character Sir Chief are two different persons, Yap said Sir Chief is only 60% of the real Richard Yap.

“I’m not as expressive in real life. I’m of Chinese descent. We’re not showy in terms of emotions. We are more on the business side of things rather than the emotional side,” he said.

With his current popularity, Yap believes people should not idolize him too much.

“I’m just a regular guy who happens to be on Twitter. I get more than 600 tweets in an hour saying how are you. I used to answer all of them when I had less followers. Now I can’t… I think it’s the role they look up to, not really the person. They don’t really know me that well,” he said.

First aired in July 2012 and originally set for a one-season run, the daytime series has been extended numerous times due to its popularity, with a movie version confirmed to be in the works.

It is credited for having re-written daytime programming on local TV, setting ratings previously unheard of from a show that airs in the morning.

Since it started gaining attention from a lot of viewers, the series has consistently been ranked in the most watched programs nationwide, according to data from multi-national market research group Kantar Media.

It has also been the most liked and most watched program in iWanTV which gets more than 100,000 hits every day.
