MANILA - Among the dozens of awards and recognition that veteran actor Joel Torre has received throughout his career, he finds his latest win for his role in "On The Job" the most humbling.

Speaking with reporters after the 37th Gawad Urian held Tuesday night, the 52-year-old actor said he feels blessed to be given the chance to do an action film, let alone win Best Actor.

"Sa edad kong ito, alam mong 'yung mga roles na dadating sa iyo ay hindi na masyadong as exciting pero thank God na nabigyan pa ako ng role na ganito," he said.

In "On the Job," Torre plays the role of Tatang, a middle-aged hitman looking for a way out his criminal lifestyle. He starred alongside Kapamilya actors Gerald Anderson and Piolo Pascual, as well as Joey Marquez, who was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the annual critics' awards.

The film, directed by Erik Matti, is widely considered as a critical success. The New York Times noted how "this raw, twisty crime drama from the Filipino director begins with a blown-off face and never looks back."

The San Francisco Chronicle, in its review, said the action thriller "is a sturdy and sophisticated crime drama from the Philippines that takes a pretty gruesome situation and enriches its presentation with lots of human detail."

In his acceptance speech, Torre spoke highly of his co-stars and all those who worked on the film. He also dedicated his latest award to his wife for putting up with his "mistress" -- his career -- for a good 30 years.

"I know you like diamonds but this is more precious," he said to his wife, Christy Azcona.

Torre was also quick to heap praise on independent films such as Best Picture winner "Norte, Hannganan ng Kasaysayan" and director Lav Diaz for representing the country in the international cinematic community.

"Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan," along with his film "On The Job," were both screened in the prestigious 66th Cannes Film Festival last year.

"I've worked with Lav many times and 'yun naman ang vision niya eh. To make good films one after the other and I think pinandigan niya 'yung advocacy niya about doing films," Torre said.
