MANILA, Philippines – A former actress has traded the glitz and glamour of show business for a career that requires a different skill: driving a taxi.

Alma Antonio, who starred in the 1996 remake of Celso Ad Castillo’s “Isla,” is now 1 of just 3 female airport taxi drivers in Metro Manila.

During her stint in show business, Antonio took on small roles to support herself financially.

She was later discovered by acclaimed director Castillo, who took notice of Antonio’s appeal.

“She was a real trooper. She had tremendous appeal sa screen,” said Castillo.

Antonio starred in several other films and took on sexier roles as an actress.

Moving to Canada

However, her career as a sexy star was put on hold when her boyfriend got her pregnant in the late 90s.

Antonio gave birth in Canada, where she also worked part-time as a driver and caregiver.

She then returned to the Philippines in the hopes of settling down with the father of her child.

But when she was reunited with her boyfriend, she found out that he had moved on and is in relationship with another woman.

“Doon na nagsimula ang depression ko sa buhay. Hindi na ako makapag-isip. Talagang wala na akong pwedeng gawin,” Antonio said.

She left the country anew and tried her luck in Japan, where she worked as a singer.

Professional driver

Antonio returned to the country but no longer sought the klieg lights.

Instead, she trained with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to become a professional bus driver.

In 2011, Antonio and with 12 other women were accredited as professional drivers.

She then moved on to becoming an authorized taxi driver at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

“Siya lang ang babae sa amin, kaya kapag biruan, nakikisama din siya. Wala namang problema sa kanya, marunong siya makisama,” said Charlito Lanugan, one of Antonio’s colleagues.
