MANILA -- Veteran actress Nora Aunor made her first big public appearance Wednesday at the Cultural Center of the Philippines amid the continuing controversy over the decision of President Benigno Aquino III not to proclaim her as a National Artist.

Aunor attended the launch of the Cinemalaya independent film festival, where her movie "Hustisya" is one of the entries.

Aunor refused to answer questions about her non-inclusion in the National Artist list due to her drug case in the United States nine years ago.

But she was profuse in her gratitude to all those who rallied behind her in the issue.

Aunor also laughed at speculations that her t-shirt bearing the word "hustisya" was a swipe at the government.

She said she was just proud of the film made by Ricky Lee and Joel Lamangan where she plays the head of a syndicate that traffics women. -- Report from Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News
