MANILA, Philippines - Former matinee idol Eddie Gutierrez confessed that King of Comedy Dolphy was more popular to female fans than him.

Gutierrez said he witnessed how women fell to Dolphy's charm when they went to Japan to represent their film  "The Big Broadcast" under Sampaguita Pictures at the Asian Film Festival where the film won the best choreography award.

"When we were together this was in Japan, Bimbo Danao was then the biggest star of Japan, he is a  Filipino, a musician, a singer and a good friend of Dolphy. So he invited us to his club. Tapos pinakilala si Dolphy 'number one comedian in the Philippines Dolphy and we have another actor from the Philippines Eddie Gutierrez.' So we had so much fun and all the girls were surrounding us," Gutierrez recalled.

Danao then announced that Dolphy will do a number.

"So he started dancing chacha, boogie, pachanga and all the girls went wild. Ako naiwan sa akin dalawang babae na lang. Lahat ng babae nakapulupot kay Dolphy because he was a hit that night," Gutierrez recalled.

"Noong umuwi na ako si Dolphy may kasamang apat ako dalawa, tinake home namin. Hindi namin tinake home (ang babae) tinake home namin yung sushi, yung sushi kasi mahal ang pagkain sa Japan," he said.

Best dressed star

In his speech, Gutierrez also praised Dolphy not only as a good actor but as a total entertainer.

"He's not only the Comedy  King, he's a dramatic actor, he's a dancer, an action star," he said.

Gutierrez said that aside from acting, he learned a lot from Dolphy including how to dress.

"Alam mo to me Dolphy is the best dressed actor in the Philippines. Napakagaling magbihis. Ang ganda magdala, ang ganda magterno ng damit niya. Kung minsan naka-rubbershoes lang, maong, t-shirt tapos naka-sumbrero pero napagandang tignan when Dolphy wears clothes like that," Gutierrez said.

In 1968, Gutierrez did the film "Tiririt ng Maya, Tiririt ng Ibon" with Dolphy.

He also played the contravida role in the film version of Dolphy's hit sitcom "Home Along Da Riles."

He worked again with Dolphy in "Home Along The Riber."

"Para sa akin si Dolphy is the perfect gentleman. Napakabait na tao di lang sa kaibigan at mga anak kung hindi pati sa fans nya.  Kaya lahat, bata,  teenager matanda lahat nanood kay Dolphy. Dolphs, we love you very much. Hindi ka pa nalalagutan ng hininga tumake off ka na papuntang langit. Ganoon ka kabait Dolphs. We love you," Gutierrez said.
