Dolphy honored with 'People's Artist Award'
MANILA, Philippines – Comedy king Dolphy on Friday night was posthumously honored with a “People’s Artist Award," presented by fellow actor and former President Joseph Estrada during his wake at the Heritage Park in Taguig City.
The award, bestowed upon Dolphy by the Dakilang Lahi Foundation, recognizes the many contributions of the actor to the movie industry.
Eric Quizon, one of Dolphy’s children, accepted the award from Estrada on behalf of the clan.
Dolphy was nominated for National Artist during the Arroyo administration, but didn't get the award.
Dolphy supported former President Gloria Macagal Arroyo's rival, actor Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ), in the 2004 presidential elections. He lost in the official count. He died in December 2004.
Estrada, who produced one of Dolphy’s many films, shared a long friendship with the comedy icon and the late FPJ.
“Si Pareng Pidol kahit na di kami masyadong matagal nagsama, pero nagkasama din kami at nagkahulihan ng loob dahil iisa lang ang hilig namin siguro,” Estrada said in his eulogy, which elicited laughter from the crowd.
Dolphy and Estrada both fathered several children with different women. Dolphy has 18 kids, including an adopted child, with 6 women. Estrada has at least 8 children with 4 women.
“Tunay na ama at mapagmahal sa kanyang mga anak kahit marami siyang minamahal na iba. Hindi niya nakakalimutan ang magpahalaga sa kanyang mga anak,” Estrada added.
Dolphy’ colleagues in his early days as an actor also paid tribute to him in a gathering dubbed as “Sampaguita Night”.
Dolphy was an artist for Sampaguita Pictures from 1953 to 1962 and appeared in 65 films for the company.
Among those who eulogized the comedy king was Bella Flores, the most popular antagonist at that time, as well as Emmanuel Borlaza, the film director who had the most collaborations with Dolphy.
Meanwhile, German Moreno thanked Dolphy for helping change the Filipino's perception of homosexuals through his gay roles.
“Dahil noong araw, sa ugali nating Pilipino, ikinahihiya kapag mayroong anak na isinalang at naging ganun sa paglaki. Kinukutya sa kalye pag lumalakad, tinutukso, pero nung gampanan ni Dolphy ang jack n Jill, Facifica Falayfay, na in love ang mga magulang sa performance ni Dolphy bilang kabaklaan,” Moreno said.
