MANILA, Philippines – The cosmetic procedures done on Filipino international singing sensation Charice Pempengco drew mixed reactions from her Filipino fans and supporters.

Many of her fans believed that there was no need for the 18-year-old songstress to have thermage and Botox procedures for her performances in the second season of the hit US musical television series “Glee.”

Some even raised concern that the procedures might affect her voice. Charice's latest single "Pyramid" has become a hit in the US and other countries.

An abs-cbnNEWS.com reader, with username htinla, noted that Charice has natural beauty, and “no amount of Botox could ever enhance it.”

“It pains me to hear that she had to shed tears over a cosmetic procedure. I hope it was solely her idea to do this - something she chose to do based on her own well-informed assessment of herself - and not the sheer consequence of some outside influence or recommendation,” htinla commented.

Vicky Belo's advice

It was last Saturday when Charice underwent thermage and Botox procedures in one of Vicki Belo's clinics.

While the 30-minute thermage procedure was painless, Charice was in tears as celebrity doctor Belo injected Botox in her face, specifically in the jaw area. Charice admitted that she was afraid of needles.

“Lahat po ng mga tao inaasahan nila, ‘Ano kaya ‘yong itsura ni Charice? Karapat-dapat ba siyang itapat kay Rachel Berry?’ So, siyempre sobrang laki ng pressure,” Charice said.

According to Belo, the procedures would make her naturally round face narrower.

But reader htinla pointed out that Charice’s “natural self,” aside from her “killer singing skill,” is an asset.

“She's a refreshing antidote to all the manufactured ‘talent’ that is so ubiquitous nowadays and I hope she never strays from her origins. Hopefully this will be the extent of her foray into cosmetic enhancement, at least for a very, very long time,” htinla wrote.

'Was Charice well-informed?'

Another reader, minaprad, wondered whether Charice was informed by her doctor about the “complications or unwanted side-effects of the cosmetic procedure done on her.”

“I read in the newspaper long ago that Barbra Streisand refused to have her big hook nose reshaped to a slimmer and more beautiful one. Her reason: it might interfere with the acoustics in her nose and affect her singing,” minaprad commented, adding:

“Compared to the rest of their bodies, top Olympic swimmers, especially women, have unusually large shoulders. Maybe, chewing gum is good exercise for the jaws and muscles around the face, keep them pliable and in top condition. And in Charice's case, they're flexible and pliable enough to give her powerful voice in singing.”

According to Belo, one of the reasons why Charice’s face is allegedly getting wider is her habit of chewing gums.

Another reader, Pear56, also expressed concern that the cosmetic procedures might affect her voice. “A good hairstyle and make-up could have achieved what you wanted. Hope it does not affect your voice.”

Too young?

In a report by Associated Press (AP), some of Charice’s supporters said they thought she is still too young to have the procedures.

"I think it's okay for women to have procedures done, but Charice is too young. Does she need it?" said Patricia Carpio, a 21-year-old student, told AP.

Myrna Lumanao, a 23-year-old seller in a doughnut stall, also told AP that looking natural is better. "I guess she can afford to have those procedures done because she has the money, but I wish she did not change her looks."

When AP asked Charice's publicist’s to comment, Liz Rosenberg maintained that the Filipino singer needed to have Botox to treat the muscle pain in her jaw. Rosenberg also said the procedure was "absolutely not cosmetic."

Also, Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of New York's Society of Plastic Surgeons and director of plastic surgery at Maimonides Medical Center in New York, told AP that he would be “reticent to consider Botox for a normal 18-year-old.”
