'MMK' shows story behind viral hospital wedding video
MMK's reenactment of the wedding of cancer patient Hazzy Rowden and Liezl at the Philippine General Hospital. The groom died hours after the wedding.
MANILA (UPDATED) The story of a dying cancer patient at the Philippine General Hospital who kept his promise of marrying the love of his life was featured in this week's episode of ABS-CBN's drama anthology "Maalaala Mo Kaya" (MMK).
The video of Rowden and Liezl Go's real wedding was uploaded by Rowden's brother, Chef Hasset Go, on June 18, 2014. The video went viral, currently with 11,806,509 views.
People became familiar with Rowden and Liezl's wedding through the video, but they were unfamiliar with the couple's background.
Hazzy (Rowden) and Liezl met in a club. At that time, Hazzy was working in a bank in Oroquieta City in Misamis Occidental, while Liezl was a college student.
Liezl had a reputation: she was known as a woman who drank a lot and had affairs with married men. She was also tagged as a "cheap" woman and a drug user.
Hazzy, on the other hand, was a family-oriented man. He immediately considered Liezl as his girlfriend after spending a night together.
Unlike other couples, Hazzy and Liezl did not go through the courting stage. Liezl broke up with her boyfriend and went into a relationship with Hazzy.
Despite their relationship, Liezl still did not take her relationship with Hazzy seriously.
Liezl also felt uncomfortable with Hazzy's family, feeling that his family did not like her.
Hazzy's mother asked him to stay with them in Manila as soon as the couple discovered that they would soon be having a child.
Liezl and their baby left for Manila to live with Hazzy and his family. She found it difficult to live with them at first, especially with Hazzy's mother around them.
Hazzy had always been vocal about his intentions of marrying Liezl, but Liezl was hesistant, fearing that their happiness would soon end if they tie the knot.
Liezl's relationship with Hazzy's family got better in time. Hazzy finally set a date for their wedding, something that he had been preparing for a while.
However, before the wedding was to take place, Hazzy was diagnosed with Stage IV liver cancer in May (2014), 2 months before his birthday.
Not wanting to break his promise, Hazzy asked the help of his brothers and his family to secretly prepare their wedding.
Despite his condition, he managed to go through the wedding so as not to disappoint Liezl, his girlfriend of 4 years.
Less than 10 hours after he married Liezl on June 11, 2014, Hazzy passed away.
The episode, entitled "Wedding Gown," was directed by Nuel Crisostomo Naval and written by Denise O’Hara and Arah Jell Badayos.
