MANILA - Melissa Ricks said the father of her child, while admittedly not keen on going public, has been nothing but supportive of her, 4 months and 2 weeks into her pregnancy.
Speaking exclusively with ABS-CBN News' Gretchen Fullido on Wednesday, the 24-year-old actress said she and her partner have agreed to keep their relationship private.
"I've learned also na it's better to keep your personal life to yourself. You have something to go home to, you have something to enjoy. Sana maintindihan ng tao 'yon," she said.
"Pero he's a good guy. Happy ako sa kanya. He makes me very happy."
While decidedly mum on details of their relationship, Ricks hinted on how long they have been together. "I met him last year pa. Walang exact date, pero ever since I met him, we haven't stopped talking. Iyon na 'yon. Persistent!" she said.
Ricks found out about her pregnancy on its seventh week, and shortly told her partner of the news. She said he had a similar reaction as hers, noting she was calm and overflowing with joy when she saw, for the first time, her baby's heartbeat through ultrasound.
"Oo, sobrang supportive," she said of partner's reaction to her pregnancy. "First na sinabi ko sa kanya, gano'n din. Same kami ng reaction. Actually, he didn't hesitate. Wala. Siyempre, the baby is a blessing, you know. A baby coming into this world is a huge blessing to anyone."
"I think naman we're in the right age. Sa panahon na 'to, we're in the right age. We're ready to take on the responsibility," she added.
Her partner's family, according to Ricks, was no less thrilled about her pregnancy. She noted that the baby will be the first grandchild of both her and her boyfriend's sides of the family.
Ricks said she is also happy to be getting along with her partner's friends.
"Sobrang natutuwa ako, kasi first apo 'to both sides. They're all excited. They're very kind and welcoming to me, kahit 'yung mga friends niya (boyfriend), sobrang babait nila sa akin," she said.
"It's a whole, different new world na pinasok ko. Kasi sanay ako, puro showbiz friends ko. Ngayon, I have whole new group of friends that don't involve showbiz. Sobrang natutuwa ako."
Ricks entered showbiz in 2004 when she became one of the finalists of the ABS-CBN talent search "Star Circle Quest." She has been cast in several Kapamilya series, most recently "Walang Hanggan" and "Honesto."
Noting she grew up in the industry, Ricks said she first met her partner at a time when she decided to go out of her comfort zone and meet new people outside of show business.
"I don't really go out, unless I'm with my close friends. Iilan lang naman ang close friends ko. I'm always in my shell. And this time, I decided, I have to go out. I have to... parang lawakan ang pag-iisip ko, to meet new people. I really wanted to start my journey being an adult," she said.
Asked if her partner has been instrumental in helping her mature, Ricks answered: "A huge part of that (maturity) was him, definitely."
