MANILA, Philippines – After the scheming Vera Cruz in “Magkaribal” and the villainous Victoria dela Vega in “Maria la del Barrio,” actress-host Angel Aquino is set to return to primetime as a “kontrabida” via ABS-CBN’s upcoming series.

Aquino on Thursday confirmed that she will portray an antagonist anew in ABS-CBN’s next big project, “Apoy sa Dagat.”

Also starring Piolo Pascual, Angelica Panganiban and Diether Ocampo, the series is expected for a primetime telecast later this year.

“If Angelica (Panganiban) is already there as the bida, she needs a kontrabida, and that’s me,” Aquino said during the press launch of her new lifestyle program, “Interior Motives.”

In the show, Aquino makes her first solo hosting gig after lifestyle programs “F” and “Us Girls,” which she used to co-host.

These lifestyle shows, she said, allowed her to show her “real self” to viewers, allaying concerns that she might be typecast as the perennial villainess after a string of kontrabida roles on TV.

"No, [I don't worry about getting typecast as an antagonist], because they see the real me in these shows, so I'm glad," she said, adding, "Hosting is a good breather for me. I enjoy it. I just have fun with my crew, with the staff."

Hosting vs acting

Whereas hosting is a "breather" for Aquino, the acclaimed actress sees her character portrayals on TV as continuous "challenge."

"Acting naman, it keeps me on my toes. That's why I look forward to doing both. Kasi with acting, you're not so complacent, you're always challenged by delivering what's needed to be there," she said.

"It's more fun to do kontrabida roles. I think both are challenging. Being mabait is also challenging because they always make you cry. When you're the good person, I don't know why you have to cry so much, but that's the role.

"Sa kontrabida naman, there's the crying but there's also the maldita part, which is fun to do," she said.

As she is set to juggle "Interior Motives" and "Apoy" in the coming months, the award-winning actress said she hopes to thrive in doing both in the long run.

"I wish to keep both, I really do. Because this is me, that's the real me, but slightly more glamorous and polished and glossy; but in acting kasi I see a lot of different people that I can be, so I'd really like to keep both," she said.
