MANILA - "Perfect!"

This was how Gretchen Barretto described being offered to play the role of a mistress in a new Star Cinema film slated for release early next year.

The actress announced the project on Thursday shortly after her contract-signing with the ABS-CBN film outfit, which is also producing her comeback film "The Trial."

The Chito Rono movie also stars John Lloyd Cruz, Richard Gomez, and Jessy Mendiola, and is scheduled to hit cinemas in late 2014.

Barretto drew laughs when she said, in jest, that being a mistress is what she does best and that her next project will require little acting.

According to Barretto, her second film under Star Cinema will also be directed by Rono and will tackle the "etiquette of mistresses," as detailed in a book.

While Barretto did not specify the source material, a 1992 book by Julie Yap Daza, "Etiquette for Mistresses and What Wives Can Learn From Them," became a bestseller at the time it was released.

"Everybody's curious kung ano ang buhay ng isang kabit, kung ano ang buhay ng isang mistress," Barretto said, explaining what moviegoers can expect from the film.

She added: "I am curious also, dahil iba-iba ang buhay ng mga iyan. Maganda 'yung makikita niyo, kung ano ang mga buhay na meron sila."

Asked if she is concerned about how the public will react to her in the role, Barretto said she has had her share of "bashing" and is now used to it. Criticisms, she added, only motivate her to come up with better projects.

"Alam mo, at age 44, marami na akong pinagdaanan sa buhay. I feel like I have been freed," she said. "Wala na akong maitatago sa buhay ko. Marami na kayong alam sa buhay ko. Wala na akong kinakatakutan. Right now, I can be myself, I can accept any role I want to play, I can just give you my best!"

At this time, Barretto said she cannot detail the film's cast members.
