Erik Matti challenged to sell 'OTJ' in PH
MANILA -- Director Erik Matti said that the next challenge for him is to sell his acclaimed crime-thriller "On The Job" here in the Philippines.
"On the Job," which stars Joel Torre, Gerald Anderson, Piolo Pascual and Joey Marquez received a standing ovation during its screening at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival.
"The challenge is to sell it here in the Philippines. I think Cannes is just the gravy to work with. Ang malaking bagay if we could sell it, if we could make the local audience come and see it. I think that's when we're going to be successful," Matti said in an interview on the ANC program "Headstart" on Friday.
Matti said he is happy that Kapamilya leading men Anderson and Pascual agreed to be part of "On the Job."
"I think the script sold it for everyone. We sent it to a few actors. Everyone is so busy with TV nowadays, so we told them, 'don't say no yet until you read the script.' So when we offered the roles, not just with Piolo and Gerald but with all the major stars -- Rosanna Roces, Vivian Velez -- they immediately said yes.
"With Vivian, for example, the deal was I'm not going to see much of your face, I'm just going to be using your voice. And she said, 'okay.'"
Asked if he feels the pressure of doing well in the box office, similar to the comedy movies "Kimmy Dora" and "Sisterakas," Matti said: "We are exploring something new. It's a good thing that Star Cinema picked up the project, but we are ready to just produce it with a small budget. But the original plan since scripting was to really put together a stellar cast, pretty much like an ensemble piece of film.
"I think 'yun din 'yung yabang, it's not just an action piece and we're expecting people to be excited about it. Kasi I only do a movie na I want to watch also. I'm excited that there are a lot of people like me," he added.
"On the Job" will hit cinemas nationwide on August 28.
