MANILA -- The Voice Kids" champion Lyca Gairanod showed her acting prowess in this week's episode of ABS-CBN's drama anthology "Maalaala Mo Kaya" (MMK).

Gairanod acted as herself and showed her life story as a child scavenger in Tanza, Cavite.

Gairanod used to scavenge junk to sell, which she disclosed during the Blind Auditions of 'The Voice Kids'.

She was likened to screen veteran Nora Aunor, herself a singing champion, because of her humble background and talent.

In the MMK episode, it was revealed that Gairanod's mother, Maria Nessel, was hesitant in allowing her child to join the contest, fearing they would be unfairly judged because they were poor.

Gairanod first learned about the contest when her brother encouraged their parents to allow her to join the contest.

Although hesitant at first, Maria Nessel gave in and brought Lyca to Manila to join the auditions.

The journey to the grand finals was not easy for Gairanod and her family, as they had to endure their neighbors' lack of trust in her talent, often hearing comments that Lyca would not make it and that they were just wasting their time commuting back and forth to audition for the contest.

One of Gairanod's sisters also got sick while they were in the middle of the competition, forcing his father to sell their boat.

Gairanod had a hard time reading the English lyrics of some of the songs assigned to her. What made it more difficult for her was the fact that her parents could not do anything to make it easier for her.

Her mother almost gave up on the competition since she did not want to lead Lyca on and watch her get heartbroken if she loses.

But as Gairanod went further in the "The Voice Kids," her neighbors started showing support for her.

She then proved all her critics wrong when she was named as the first champion of "The Voice Kids" with rendition of "Narito Ako."

At the end of the episode, MMK host, Charo Santos-Concio expressed her admiration for Garainod's determination and passion.

Malou de Guzman and Ronnie Lazaro played the role of Gairanod's supportive parents.

The episode was written by Benson Logronio and Arah Jell Badayos, and directed by Nuel Naval.
