Interpreter needed for Pinoy beauty queens?
MANILA, Philippines - Like contenders from non-English-speaking nations, Filipinos competing in international beauty pageants should be allowed to speak in Tagalog, Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz has suggested.
Diaz said Filipino beauty queens should also have an option to get an interpreter like their counterparts from Venezuela and Mexico, among others.
She raised the need for an interpreter following the controversial response of Miss Universe 4th runner-up Venus Raj during the question-and-answer portion.
Like many people, Diaz said she believes that Raj lost her chance to win the coveted crown because of her much talked about "major, major" response.
"The problem I think is, like me before, she thinks in Tagalog. So, ‘major major’ is what? Malaking malaki o bonggang bongga? The context is lost or misinterpreted abroad, even among Filipinos," said Diaz.
According to reports, Miss Universe 2010 Jimena Navarrete of Mexico opted to have an interpreter even though she can speak English.
Many were dismayed by Raj's answer when asked by an actor judge to cite her one biggest mistake in life.
Raj's answer was: "You know what, sir, in my 22 years of existence I can say that there's nothing major, major problem that I've done in my life because I'm very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So thank you so much that I'm here. Thank you, thank you so much!"

Diaz’s suggestion was seconded by educator Jose Wendell Capili of the University of the Philippines.
Capili noted that Filipino language has many “nuances” and that there are many aspects of the language that are hard to translate.
Capili said it would have been better for the Filipino-Indian beauty from Camarines Sur to have had answered in her native tongue.
Nonetheless, he maintained that Raj should not be judged because of the apparent slip-up.

NO!
IT SHOULD BE UP TO THE DISCRETION OF THE PAGEANT AGENCY OF EACH COUNTRIES... AND UP TO THE CANDIDATES IF THEY FEEL LIKE THEY NEED AN INTERPRETER OR NOT.
VENUS DID AN EXCELLENT JOB IN RESPONDING TO THE BEST OF HER ABILITY. IT'S THE FILIPINO WHO CANNOT ACCEPT HER ANSWER AND HER NOT BRINGING THE BACON TO OUR COUNTRY.
VENUS I FEEL FOR YOU FOR REPRESENTING OUR COUNTRY AND YET YOU ARE NOT APPRECIATED FOR YOUR HARDWORK AND YOUR EFFORTS TO BE AT BEST.
GOD BLESS YOU GIRL AND I HOPE THIS IS A LESSON LEARNED FOR YOU THAT YOUR FELLOW FILIPINOS WERE NEVER SATISFIED NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO.
YOUR RANKING 4TH RUNNER UP IN THE MISS UNIVERSE SHOULD BE ENOUGH FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN TO BE PROUD OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT....JUST SHRUG THIS CRITICISM OFF AND MOVE ON ...
GOD BLESS YOU!
Let's face it. Graduates from
Let's face it. Graduates from Ateneo, La Salle, UP and other exclusive private schools speak better English than graduates from other schools. But that does not mean that they are more intelligent. English proficiency is not equal to wit and intelligence. And so, I believe whether our candidate would need an interpreter or not is to the discernment of the Bb. Pilipinas Charities on a representative to representative basis.
It's a case to case basis. In
It's a case to case basis. In the Bb. Pilipinas Pageant alone, you could already tell how a candidate would fare in the Q&A. For instance, Jemima San Miguel. I dont think she would be able to express herself in English no matter how brilliant her thoughts on the question would be. So, definitely she would be better off with an interpreter. The Bg. Pilipinas Charities themselves can determine if our candidate would need an interpreter or not.
Cebuano-Visayan Proud Pinoys
Please note that Cebuanos are known to be friendly, have very good English language related achievements (as documented by their proud Congresswoman C. Del Mar). They are also known to have a Quality mind, Christian attitude, Defensive, Self reliant and kind people. Everything in them are very proud and they are very helpful especially when it is the country and their loved province is in need. But now, One Cebu and their family is hurt. Whatever people said, DAMAGE HAVE BEEN DONE by Gloria Diaz to all Cebuanos and Visayan Speaking people.Even small Cebuano and Pinoy kids here in other country knows this is not right. I hope somebody or something should teach a lesson to this uncivilized tactless Gloria Diaz.
Oh c'mon Ms. Diaz! You try to
Oh c'mon Ms. Diaz! You try to check your English first before try hitting us Cebuanos. You're even having a hard time saying and distinguishing the F from the P. Get a life!

HAHA why is she making it the other way around? Don't Manila & the rest of Luzon know that Cebu tops as the island with the most number of English speakers with spot on North American accents? The Convergys best customer service award was withdrawn from Manila & given to the Cebu branch which explains my very point. Americans even favor the Cebuano mentality over the tagalog, ask one! I don't even know why we still receive broadcast feeds from Manila, we see nothing but garbage, CEBU PRIDE!
What this guy is saying is true
We should be running the country....Bwahaha!
CITY BEFORE THERE WAS A COUNTRY BIATCHES! Mga superficial pricks!
"Ang Cebuana can hardly speak English"- Gloria Diaz
Ms. Diaz, even yourself can hardly speak very straight English!!! Fix your English first before making any sweeping statement! You just made it to the top of the Cebuanos and the rest of Visayan-speaking people's Most Hated List!!!!!
Is she serious?
"Ang Cebuana can hardly speak English"....hahaha! Ay nako....this woman just insulted my native tongue. I hope she realized that her English are parang albolario na telegrama. Sadly, it's a misconception that we all know too well in how some peeps think about the other part of the archipelago. Ms. Diaz, learn to speak English first....hehee.
