MANILA, Philippines – Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz believes she may have been misunderstood when she proposed that contestants from the Philippines should use language interpreters in international beauty pageants.
She said her proposal should not be taken as an insult aimed at Cebuanos.
Some Cebuanos felt Diaz was belittling their English-speaking abilities and demanded an apology.
"Gloria Diaz, take heed, This is in riposte to your obtuse dictum towards us Cebuanos/Cebuanas; I really find it utterly inadmissible, rude and not to mention atrocious for someone who's been idolized by some to pigeonhole us as non-English speakers," a Youtube user said.
“Let me clarify it once and for all. People should have the right to say or to answer (questions) in whatever language they want to say it in. If they're Cebuanos, they can say it in Cebuano. I did not say that they did not speak English,” Diaz fired back on Saturday.
“If you're Ilocano, say it in Ilocano. But if you're Ilocano who speaks good English, say it in English. If you're Cebuano who can speak Spanish, if you're comfortable with Spanish, say it in Spanish. That's what I said and that's what I meant,” she added.
Diaz said she was shocked when she heard that some got angry over what she allegedly said.
"I was like, shocked. Everybody was so angry.. I thought they're gonna stone me to death (laughs). I want to just make people realize it is just , you know, say it with whatever you're comfortable with," she added.
Diaz, who won the Miss Universe title in 1969, said beauty pageant contestants are not required to answer questions in English.
“It's not a law. This is a beauty contest. You say it with your heart. You say what you feel. It comes from the heart. It's not the language, really,” she added. “If you wanna speak jejemon, say it in jejemon, get an interpreter.”
She also congratulated Maria Venus Raj for her fourth runner-up finish in this year’s Miss Universe.

CEBUANOS ARE MULTI DIVERSE PEOPLE – ang tindi nito Pre, multi na diverse pa! So, hindi pala pure ang Cebuanos bilang ethnic group dahil diverse daw eh! Di ko din naman alam ito pero nung ni-look up ko sabi ng computer DIVERSE = different or distinct from one another. Hindi kaya magalit ang mga Cebuanos sa nagsabi nito? Bala naman ibig sabihin ng nagsulat ay multi-skilled ang mga Cebuanos.

HER words were not taken out of context by US/CEBUANOS/CEBUANAS in her statement on the footage she clearly singled out CEBUANA, why of all the people she used us an an example, is that an act of a former beauty queen?? we are acting this way because we cannot allow anyone to mock us.
INTELLIGENT??: This is her question during miss U 1969 Question: "In the next day or so, a man will land on the moon. If a man from the moon landed in your hometown, what would you do to entertain him?"
Ms. Philippines: "Oh, Uh, just the same things I do. I think if he's been on the moon for so long, I think when he comes over he wants to change, I guess"

Gloria is one of the many intelligent & civilized person in our country. Her suggestion to improve our chance of winning an international beauty contest by providing an interpreter to our contestant is a smart idea. Unfortunately her words were taken out of context by many.
