Korina, relatives cry as Mar quits race
MANILA – Broadcaster Korina Sanchez was emotional when her fiancé, Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, declared on Tuesday that he was withdrawing from the 2010 presidential race to give way to the candidacy of fellow Liberal Party member, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
In a press conference at the Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan, Sanchez was seen wiping away her tears when her soon-to-be husband announced his decision to support Aquino.
A tissue paper was handed over to her by fellow ABS-CBN broadcaster Pia Hontiveros, who was covering the press conference.
Sanchez said it was a big sacrifice for Roxas to give up his bid for the presidency. She said she could feel the weight of that “sacrifice.”
Sanchez took a leave of absence from ABS-CBN after she got engaged to the senator. She used to co-host "Tambalan Failon at Sanchez" on dzMM and was an anchor of ABS-CBN's late night news program, "Bandila."
The high-profile couple, who are set to marry on October 23, has not been spared from criticisms since they announced their engagement on “Wowowee.”
Critics said Roxas was purportedly using Sanchez’s popularity to help him get elected in the 2010 presidential election.
Both the senator and Sanchez have vehemently denied the speculations.
Roxas’ family and relatives also came in full force to Club Filipino on Tuesday to show their support.
Like Sanchez, television footage showed them crying after the lawmaker made the announcement.
His relatives said they were saddened by Roxas’ decision because they saw how hard he had been preparing for his presidential bid.
They, however, said they are proud of him because he set aside his political ambition for the sake of the country. Reports from Jing Castañeda and Cecille Lardizabal, ABS-CBN News

di pa nakakaupo si roxas, kaya nobody can tell if his words were true if he becomes sana as president. no one can tell till we tried them. in a way, selfish ka pa rin, kasi kung tunay talaga na lalaban tayo, dapat di ka umurong kung gusto mo maging leader - a sincere and honest one. nakakatawa nga lang na di nakarating yung padyak mo sa destination nya. samantalang nauna ka nang umarangkada.
Great Man
Isa ako sa nalungkot ng mapanood ko ang press conference ni Mar Roxas. Pero mas lalong lumaki ang paghanga ko sa kanya. Anumang posisyon mo naisin tumakbo ay susuportahan pa rin kita.
