Why 14-year-old Bea was paired with John Lloyd

MANILA, Philippines – He was five years her senior when they were launched as a "love team" via a top-rating series. Ten years since, actor John Lloyd Cruz and actress Bea Alonzo are considered as one of the most successful team-ups of their generation.

At 14 years old, Alonzo was only one of the many aspirants optioned to be paired onscreen with Cruz, who was then an upcoming actor.

According to award-winning director Olivia Lamasan, who was among the panelists then, only Alonzo had the distinct "chemistry" with the young actor.

"In the story, we wanted na magkaroon [si John Lloyd] ng love team," Lamasan told "Take One" in a behind-the-scenes look at Star Cinema's "The Mistress," the onscreen couple's 10th anniversary film offering.

Yuri and Katrina

Lamasan was referring to the story of ABS-CBN's drama series "Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay," which aired in 2003.

"From there, in-audition namin, and ako, may choice was Bea Alonzo," Lamasan recounted.

"Pagtabi palang nu’ng dalawa, at their age ah -- at that time John Lloyd was only 19, Bea Alonzo was only 14 years old -- and I already said, 'Grabe 'yung chemistry nitong dalawang 'to.' Sabi ko, 'Meron, meron,'" Lamasan added.

The two would eventually star as lawyers in "Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay." She played Katrina, he portrayed Yuri.

Their love team was so well-received, they would go on to topbill several soaps and films cast opposite each other -- among them, the series "It Might Be You" and "Maging Sino Ka Man," and the films "One More Chance" and "Miss You Like Crazy."

Now, Cruz and Alonzo are set to portray their most daring roles yet via "The Mistress."

"Na-excite ako na I'm finally going to work with them in a film, kasi 10 years ago, isa ako sa mga bumuo ng kanilang love team," said Lamasan, who directed the upcoming film.

Also starring Hilda Koronel and Ronaldo Valdez, "The Mistress" will hit theaters nationwide on September 12.
