Senator defends Diaz's 'anti-Cebuano' remarks
MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Sergio Osmeña III has come to the defense of 1969 Miss Universe Gloria Diaz after she allegedly made a comment that was insulting to Cebuanos.
This was after Diaz said that 2010 Ms Universe 4th Runner Up Maria Venus Raj failed to bring home the crown because English is not her first language and that she should have used an interpreter.
In a text message, Osmeña said Diaz was just misinterpreted and she never meant to insult Cebuanos. He said Diaz's long-time boyfriend hails from Cebu.
"She was misinterpreted and misunderstood. What she meant is - do not answer in English if you are not too fluent. Use the language you are most comfortable with. After all, the sponsor provides interpreters. I agree with her," the senator said.
" We Filipinos understood what Venus was saying. But we should also appreciate that Americans and other peoples use different idioms and would not understand ours. Miss Diaz did not intend to insult the Cebuano people. Her longtime boyfriend for the last 12 years is from Cebu. "
On Wednesday, Cebu congresswoman Rachel "Cutie" del Mar criticized Diaz for making insulting statements against Cebuanos.
She said Cebuanos are also tired of racial slurs, such as people making fun or belittling Cebuano maids and drivers and imitating their accent.
The Vice Mayors League of The Philippines-Cebu has also issued a resolution declaring Diaz persona non grata in the province, according to an online report.
Diaz earlier maintained that she never said Cebuanos cannot speak English. She added that her proposal should not be taken as an insult against Cebuanos.
“Let me clarify it once and for all. People should have the right to say or to answer [questions] in whatever language they want to say it in. If they're Cebuanos, they can say it in Cebuano. I did not say that they did not speak English,” Diaz fired back.
“If you're Ilocano, say it in Ilocano. But if you're Ilocano who speaks good English, say it in English. If you're Cebuano who can speak Spanish, if you're comfortable with Spanish, say it in Spanish. That's what I said and that's what I meant,” she added.
Diaz said she was shocked when she heard that some got angry over what she allegedly said.
"I was like, shocked. Everybody was so angry.. I thought they're gonna stone me to death (laughs). I want to just make people realize it is just , you know, say it with whatever you're comfortable with," she added.

Proud Cebuano and Visayan Speaking People
Ang Senador na yan is a jerk,walay malasakit sa kapwa nya Cebuano og opportunist.Better if he keep silent than add fuel to the fire.We will remember then that he will not get our family votes and here sa Kuwait ipangumpanya ko against that opportunists Senador....I hope he will realize and will do something for this.

Kindly note, we agreed with Gloria Diaz that Pinay Beauties should use Interpreter nowadays but it is NOT ACCEPTABLE TO US regarding hitting and not respecting Cebuanos or Visayan people speaking that they can not....You should not underestimate you kapwa Pinays...Damn you Gloria why you became a Pinays Miss Universe out of nothing that you create discriminatory and divisive remarks...Now you changed again your statement ano naman kaya sa susunod..you hurt us already even my kids understand what you did.
We are proud as a Cebuano and Visayan people wherever we are that's why we are vigilant and merely voicing out our opinion and speaking from heart as fellow native(as what our proud Congresswoman C. Del Mar did.)masama ba yan..So be it if you dont.
Note, in Cebu we respect generally all pinoys and foreigners and proud as One Cebu but if you hurt them they are Like Lapu lapu. Somebody said that money is second only to respect to one another in Cebu.

I suggest that you take another vacation if you can afford it because the pollution in Manila has really gotten into your brain. It seems it is no longer thinking right. Hibalo ka 'dong or 'boy kon ikaw nahimo nang baboy, Cebu is more advanced compared to Manila. Sa inyo sa Manila, and langgam nagkamang pa mentras sa Cebu, and langgam naglupad na! Kinsa man karon ang nangawahi sa advancement and civilization, ha?
Levity aside, when my friends in Toronto come to the Philippines, I always advise them to NEVER stay in Manila otherwise, they will hate the entire country. It's embarassing to let them breathe the polluted air in Manila after dealing with the Tagalogs' polluted minds. O basin mabahaan pa...mauwaw ta. I suggest they take a direct flight to Cebu if they can because I just want the whole country, including the hambugerong taga-MANILA to benefit from their dollars by staying in beautiful Cebu beaches and other islands because for sure, they will stay longer and spend more and leave the Philippines loving her instead of hating the country. Besides, tungod ba kaha sa ubos nga pagtan-aw aning mga Tagalog sa mga Bisaya, mirisi nga ang mangingilad ug mga mangunguot dinha sa Manila, gikan na sa Bisaya and of course, I want to spare my Canadian friends from that for it is not their fault why people in Manila act that way.
And do you know who could be blamed for these? It's the corrupt national leadership seated right in Manila influencing their corruption in the entire political system. Well, if it's not now (and hopefully it is not), it has always been that way in the past. And of course, this is coupled with the Tagalogs' feeling of superiority "kuno" na walang naidulot but the backwardness of the entire country except Cebu, of course! :-P
And even here in Canada, I still experience discrimination from the Tagalogs. Binisay-on na lang nato ni kay mauwaw ta sa binuhatan aning mga yabagon nga mga Tagalog. Sa ilang huna-huna gud, ang mga Bisaya moadto ra sa Manila kay magpa-maid, Dapat nila mahibaw-an nga ang Bisaya dili lang kay Cebu ra kon wala pa sila makat-on tungod ba kaha sige absent kay sa Manila gud, gamayng ulan, wala nay klase tungod sa baha. LOL... Gawas sa kaliwat ni bantugang Dagohoy sa Bohol ug sa Siquijor, unsa na man lang diay ang Negros, Panay ug ang mga Waray, wala na lay kwenta? Unya pa, ang kadaghanan sa Mindanao Binisaya baya ang sinultihan.
Besides, unsa may dautan kon magpa-maid? Di ba nga ang tibuok nasud well known man sa tibuok kalibutan nga nasud sa mga sulugoon which is apektado tang tanaan? Ug mura man sab ug ang mga Tagalog dili mga maids. Sa mga nasud nga dunay mga imported nga mga DH, ang mga katulong are majorly Tagalog-speaking people. And do you know about this? hahaha...
Unya, unsa na man 'dong' or 'day or 'boy, nakasabot ka ani? hahaha... Wala gyud tawon moy dag-anan kay kami naakasabot mi ninyo kay dili mi mga polpol nga pareha ninyong hambog lay gaayo!
And talking about insecurities? Wala kami niyan because we, in Cebu can stand on our own even without Manila if we were to separate. Itanim n'yo 'yan sa kokote ninyo!
So sino ngayon ang ma-blame sa pagkawatak-watak ng mga Pilipino abir? Iyang pagka-matapobre at pagkaamayabang ninyo, pakibawas n'yo lang kasi it's really pissng the Cebuanos off. Our problem is we discriminate our own kind... who told you that Cebuanos both in Mindanao and Visayas are second class citizens? the Manilenos, Tagalogs? No we are eating our own insecurities.... Manila should be the neutral field that unite the whole country because most living here are not only Tagalogs I hear Cebuanos in a jeep and Ilocanos in our office. I went to Cebu and I experienced racism but when i went in Bohol i felt that i am still in the Philippines even sometimes i cant understand their language.
You are dying to defeat the Tagalogs and because of that you are really defeated. No need to compete we just need to be united as one nation.
You can request to China to nuke Manila. But the whole nation will be affected.
