'Juan dela Cruz' is Philippines' No. 1 show in August
13 out of 15 top-rating programs are Kapamilya shows
MANILA -- The primetime series starring Coco Martin as the destined "Tagabantay" struggling with his identity as a half-aswang dominated nationwide ratings in August, reclaiming the No. 1 spot as the most watched TV program across urban and rural areas in the Philippines.
"Juan dela Cruz" led the Top 15 shows in the country, as measured by the multi-national market research group Kantar Media, having garnered an average national TV rating of 35.9% last month.
Kantar Media uses a nationwide panel size of 2,609 urban and rural homes that represent 100% of the total Philippine TV viewing population.
The last time "Juan dela Cruz" topped the list was in May, as it was overtaken by the defunct family drama series "Ina, Kapatid, Anak" and the long-running drama anthology "Maalaala Mo Kaya" in June and July, respectively.
Airing on Saturdays, "Maalaala Mo Kaya" nonetheless closely trailed "Juan dela Cruz" in August, having registered an average nationwide rating of 33.7%.
'Got to Believe' starts strong
In third place in the same month is the new primetime series starring teen "love team" Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. With its nationwide ratings consistently above 30% since its debut on August 26, "Got to Believe" averaged 32.4% for the month.
Completing ABS-CBN's Top 5 sweep of the country's most watched programs last month are its flagship newscast "TV Patrol" in fourth, with 29.9%; and the weekend fantasy anthology "Wansapanataym" in fifth, with 29.7%.
"Muling Buksan ang Puso" and the recently concluded "Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala," both primetime offerings, took the sixth and seventh spots, with 27.9% and 26.6% in average nationwide rating, respectively. Another ABS-CBN primetime series making it to the list is "Annaliza," which scored 22% to place 12th.
Owing to the strong performance of its Primetime Bida line-up, or Kapamilya programs aired between 6 p.m. and 12 midnight, ABS-CBN easily ranked No. 1 in terms of total audience share during the primetime block. It scored 47%, versus GMA-7's 32% and TV5's 10%.
Still the lone daytime series in the Top 15 list, as in previous months, is the "kilig-serye" starring Richard Yap and Jodi Sta. Maria. Having averaged 22.2% in national TV ratings last month, it placed 11th.
ABS-CBN likewise relied on weekend programs in achieving a 13-out-of-15 showing in August's most watched programs across the country, with the current affairs program "Rated K" placing eighth with 23.6%; and the reality talent search "The Voice of the Philippines" placing 10th with 23.2%.
Also in the list are the kiddie gag show "Goin' Bulilit," which garnered 21.8% to place 13th; and the reality game show "Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal," which scored 21.3% to place 15th.
The strong viewership of ABS-CBN across its airing blocks was reflected in the Kapamilya network's wide lead over its competitors in total day national TV viewership.
According to Kantar Media, ABS-CBN's total audience share in August was at 41%, while GMA-7 and TV5 only garnered 34% and 11%, respectively.
