'Amorosa' beats Apo musical movie at box office
MANILA, Philippines – It seems Filipino moviegoers are more interested in watching horror films than movie musicals.
According to the latest data of website Box Office Mojo for the period August 29 to September 2, the Angel Aquino horror movie “Amorosa: The Revenge” earned an estimated P11,738,087 on its first five days, almost double the box office receipts of the musical “I Do Bidoo Bidoo,” which took in an estimated P5,808,653.
Both films opened in theaters on August 29 although “Amorosa,” produced by Skylight Films, ABS-CBN Films’ “maindie” unit, played on only 50 screens, compared to the 90 theaters of “I Do Bidoo Bidoo,” a musical which uses the songs of the legendary OPM trio, Apo Hiking Society.
The Hollywood remake “Total Recall” remained the top movie in the Philippines for the second week in a row, with total box office earnings of P51,296,249.
The Hollywood action movie, “The Bourne Legacy,” which was partly shot in the Philippines, has now earned more than P200 million in the local box office after a month in theaters. The Jeremy Renner-starrer took its total earnings in the Philippines to P202,157,705.
Meanwhile, Star Cinema’s youth-oriented movie, “The Reunion,” has now earned P 68,112,967 after three weeks. It is now the fourth highest-earning local movie this year after Star Cinema’s “Unofficially Yours,” “Kimmy Dora and the Temple of Kiyeme” and “The Healing,” all of which earned more than P100 million at the box office.
