Gloria Diaz: Winning Ms. Universe is 99% luck
MANILA, Philippines - Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz said she is very proud of beauty queen Shamcey Supsup, who finished third runner up in this year’s Miss Universe pageant.
In an interview with radio dzMM, Diaz said Supsup has come a long way and she really brought pride and honor to the country.
“Super karangalan. Just the thought na two in a row. Last year we had Venus and then Shamcey. I think that’s super good. Baka next year nandiyan na...Baka next year, 2 winners na,” she said.
According to Diaz, more than being a competition of who is the most beautiful or the smartest, Miss Universe is also about “luck.”
“Everybody has things to say but like I’ve always said, first of all you will not be there if you’re not beautiful, if you’re not smart, if you’re not tall or pretty. But I’ve told this over and over. It’s 99% luck. Everybody has an opinion why she did not win, whether the answer was good enough or not good enough. To some people it was smart, to some people it was kulang. But really it’s just luck at the end of the day,” she said.
Diaz also commented on remarks saying Supsup’s answer was not given more weight given that she was the only finalist who did not have an interpreter and chose to answer the judge’s question in English.
“You have a choice to have an interpreter or no interpreter. You can speak in your native language... it’s all your choice. You’re allowed to do whatever you want to do,” she said. She said Supsup's answer was "spontaneous and direct to the point."
Last year, Diaz was declared persona non grata in Cebu. Cebuanos reportedly felt insulted when she purportedly said the people there can hardly speak English or Tagalog.
After Miss Universe 4th runner-up Venus Raj’s botched response to the 2010 pageant’s customary Q&A portion, Diaz had proposed to get interpreters for Filipino beauty queens competing in international pageants.
