MANILA - A Filipino film is headed to the Oscars.

The "dramedy" "Ded na si Lolo" is the Philippines' entry to the 82nd Academy Awards’ best foreign language film category next year.

The Soxie Topacio’s film bested 12 movies for the honor of representing the country to the Oscars including award-winning "Baler,” “Jay,” "100," "Manila,” and "Adela."

"Ded na si Lolo" revolves around a child whose grandfather dies, but his family's superstitions get in the way of their mourning.

It stars Elizabeth Oropesa, Gina Alajar, Roderick Paulate, Manilyn Reynes, Dick Israel and BJ Forbes.

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be presented on March 7, 2010 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Earlier, rumors spread that Brillante Mendoza’s “Lola” would be the official entry of the Philippines to the Oscars but the filmmaker denied this. “Lola” was screened at the main competition of 66th Venice International Film Festival two weeks ago.

According to Mendoza, it is the task of the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) to choose a Filipino movie to represent the country in the annual prestigious competition.

Judy Ann Santos’ “Ploning" was the country's entry to the 2009 Oscar Awards. –Report from ANC
