MANILA – Broadcaster Tina Monzon-Palma, ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya program head, was overwhelmed by the horde of volunteers, some of whom were students, who continue to show up at the foundation’s warehouses to help pack donated goods meant for the victims of tropical storm Ondoy (international codename Ketsana).

Monzon-Palma said Sagip Kapamilya continuously receives donations and cash pledges from various individuals and corporations.

“Once, we made an appeal that we’re running out of rice and coffee. The next time around, all of the donations were rice and coffee,” she said in an interview on ANC.

She aded: “We’re very encouraged with the kind of support that is coming from the volunteers… [and] donors themselves everyday. We continue to receive the basic things that we need to be able to release the relief goods right away.”

As of Tuesday midnight, ABS-CBN telethon, led by some Kapamilya stars, has raised P27 million in cash pledges and P39 million worth of goods and services. She said cash pledges will be used for the “rehabilitation part” that includes providing homes and livelihoods to the victims.

She said though that much still needs to be done. She said Sagip Kapamilya has been receiving reports that help is not reaching other affected areas.

“We’ve put our telephone lines on the screen and we have a call center where they can actually tell us where they are because we have not, and even the government, reached the people that we need to reach at this point,” she said.

She aappealed for more vehicles that will be used to deliver the donated goods. She added that evacuees also need toothbrush, toothpaste and soaps.

“We make an appeal, any kind of time and talent that they can give us and resources is much appreciated,” she said.

She said the foundation needs 200 volunteers per four-hour shift to pack the goods at its warehouses in Scout Bayoran and Examiner Streets in Quezon City. She said ready-to-eat foods can be brought to ABS-CBN compound in Mother Ignacia Street.
