MANILA, Philippines – Superstar Nora Aunor has promised to help the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) promote its “Smoke-free Philippines” campaign.
During her recent meeting with PMA volunteer Fr. Robert Reyes, she extended her interest to be an advocate of the said cause.
She said, “Kapag nagkaroon ka (Reyes) ng campaign na bawal manigarilyo lalo na sa mga bata, kabataan, puwede naman akong tumulong diyan.”
However, for her to be an effective advocate, she added that she has to overcome her smoking habit first, and serve as a role model as well.
“‘Yon nga lang di ko talaga magagawa ng naninigarilyo rin ako. Kailangan huminto rin ako. Sabi ko kay father (Reyes), “Hihinto ako father, pagkatapos nun tutulong ako sa inyo kung ano 'yung layunin ninyo,’” Aunor explained.
In line with this, the PMA has extended its eagerness to help Aunor quit smoking.
In a statement released by PMA spokesperson Dr. Mike Aragon, he said that their organization is willing to help the veteran actress stop smoking.
“The PMA will help Ms. Nora Aunor to stop smoking,” he said.
“We intend to help Nora to start a free medically supervised smoke cessation program. We are looking forward for the Superstar to join the PMA’s smoke free and healthy lifestyle advocacy very soon. We wish her well.”
Aunor was rushed to The Medical City due to difficulty in breathing on Tuesday morning.
Her sickness was reportedly triggered by fatigue and other external factors like the weather.
Her manager, German Moreno, said she was diagnosed with pneumonia.
Aunor was later transferred to the Cardinal Santos Hospital in San Juan and was told to rest for at least 2 weeks.
Currently, Aunor is not yet allowed to entertain visitors because she is confined in a clean room.
The doctors also advised her to stop smoking.
According to Aunor's friend Albert Sunga, the actress' situation has stabilized and that she has regained her appetite.
All of Aunor’s children are with her in the hospital. – Report from Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News
