After Charice, Arnel Pineda invades 'Oprah'

Posted at 10/06/2009 5:17 PM | Updated as of 10/08/2009 7:26 PM

MANILA – After Charice, it was Arnel Pineda’s turn to impress Oprah Winfrey, one of the world’s most powerful women today.

Pineda and the rest of the members of the American rock band “Journey” recently guested on Oprah to promote the group’s latest album, “Revelation.”

During the show, Journey's Filipino front man could not believe that he was being interviewed by no less than Winfrey herself.

"I'm facing you (Winfrey) right now. You are [one of the] biggest [names] in show business and I'm facing you. It's like… I'm not allowed to be here but I'm here. And I thank God for that," he said.

The show featured Pineda’s journey “from total obscurity to recapturing the voice of one of the greatest bands of our time."

Pineda’s rags-to-riches story has inspired many people around the world. His life story will be made into a film titled "Don't Stop Believing: Every Man's Journey." The biopic will hit the big screen next year.

The Filipino singer was discovered on YouTube by Journey’s guitarist Neal Schon. Jonathan Cain (keyboard), Deen Castronovo (drums) and Ross Valory (bass) were equally impressed when they first watched him on YouTube performing Journey’s “Faithfully.”

Cain said: "Neal contacted us. I checked the YouTube video just like he said. And there he was singing. And I said, 'The guy got great pipes, does he speak English?’ And, ‘How are we going to get him to the stage to check him out?'" Cain said.

Valory said he had “goosebumps surplus” when he first heard Pineda sing.

Castronovo was also blown away by Pineda’s voice. “It was frightening just to hear that voice come out from that little guy. We couldn't believe it. It’s just so strong. And the best part about it was just how humble the man was, how humble human being, beautiful heart."

For Pineda, being part of Journey still feels like a dream.

"I've seen enough pain and poverty in the Philippines. I've never been that big. All I wanted was to be able to get out of it -- the pain and the poverty - and live decently everyday," he said.

He said touring around the world with his band mates is “amazing, unbelievable and fantastic.” “All the superlative words that you can utter.”

He admitted that he felt the pressure when the band played in the Philippines early this year. “There was a big responsibility and thank God I pulled it off.”

And now that he is making lots of money, Pineda said he bought a home for his family and set up his own foundation to help poor Filipinos.

Journey's Manila concert is now available on DVD in the United States.

by the way this is DAVID FOSTER explanations sa sinabi mo

===============================================================
DAVID Foster is the quintessential music man, and for the past couple of decades, he has lent his talent in making sure that fresh, young talents are given the opportunity to shine.

He is widely credited for the immense success of Celine Dion, and now, a lot of people are curious to see who the latest anointed one is.

It is none other than Charice.

“I have felt for the last five years that the next big artist was gonna be Asian. You know the Asian — this is kind of silly to try and lump the whole Asian population in one category—but years ago in Japan, the Japanese were very good at copying and the Filipino people had been very good at imitating American singers and all that,” Foster told the Asian Journal during a break at the rehearsal for Oprah’s presidential inauguration special in Washington, DC early this year.

The prolific songwriter-producer knew that the young Filipino singer had more than just the vocal chops to wow the audience.

“We’re in a new generation where these tremendous singers are coming forth, and on the top of this list is Charice and she’s not a copier, she has her own style, her own thing and I really believe that Charice is going to be the next big international star,” he said unabashedly.

Foster is seeing similarities with between Celine and Charice, especially with the way he found out about both singers’ belting prowess.

“I feel the same way about her as when I first found Celine 20 years ago singing in Canada. There’s a billion and a half Asians, it makes sense that somebody from there would come and show us the way,” he said.

Foster went on with the similarities, particularly when Celine began her career singing Gloria Gaynor disco songs. Back then, she didn’t have any of her own songs so she was essentially copying too, according to Foster. There was something different in her voice, something distinct that he knew was going to be a big hit someday.

Now Charice is on the verge of breaking the barrier when it comes to Asian singing talents.

She obviously has to sing other people’s songs because nobody was writing songs for her, but every month that I’m with her, I hear some new twist even on the songs of other people that she’s singing. That lets me know for sure that she is very soon going to develop her own style completely,” Foster explained, “I can’t wait to get in the studio with her with all new songs and watch her turn audiences on those songs.

Foster knows it too well that it is easier to turn an audience on with a song that everybody knows.

“Now, we have to create an album [for Charice] and create a slot for her where she can turn people on with her songs and we will,” he promised.

Hitman Again

Last year, David Foster staged a concert at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and invited his friends to perform with him. He also invited Charice, who shared the stage with the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Michael Bublé, Katharine McPhee, Peter Cetera and a host of other performers.

Earlier this year, he did what he calls a smaller version.

“I don’t think I could ever do that again. It was great and I was glad that Charice was able to be a part of it. Basically my whole life flashed in front of my eyes—from Babyface to Bublé to Kenny G, Peter Cetera, Bocelli. Then Charice was right in there holding her own and getting a standing ovation along with just one or two others, and it was phenomenal to see,” Foster said.

Now, this smaller version of Celine is off to a 10-city tour in the US and Canada.

“So, I’ve finally decided to hit the road and tour! I’ll be joined by a lot of my very close friends who will sing my songbook. There will also be some great surprise guest artists which I won’t mention now,” David announced on his website a couple of weeks ago, “Hoping you’ll all come see my show and also celebrate my 60th birthday.”

Of course, Charice is joining David in this tour, alongside Peter Cetera, Michael Johns, Ruben Studdard, Phillip Bailey (from Earth, Wind & Fire) and other surprise performers.

The original concert was later shown on PBS and was eventually released in CD and DVD formats. To complete the whole package, a book was also produced.

“We had everything planned. My manager and my girlfriend were pushing me and I was kicking and screaming, “Oh, too much work!” I was literally doing Seal’s album and doing the post-production on the DVD and writing the book all at once, at the same time. It was a nightmare, but I got it done,” Foster reminisced.

This DVD has been released worldwide, including the Philippines. Charice herself became busy promoting the DVD in her TV guestings and appearances back home.

This little factoid amazed Foster.

“I’ll tell you another reason why Charice is unique. I’ve heard people tell me that Charice has been promoting my Hitman CD, DVD and book in the Philippines. That is unusual for any artist to do that for somebody else, let alone somebody as young as her,” he said.

As a 16-year-old, Foster shared that all he ever thought of back then was himself.

“Even when I was 20, all I ever thought about was myself. This is a young woman who is mature beyond her years but in a very innocent way. When she is telling people about me, she really means it and of course it is helpful. I mean, when you have somebody like Charice talking about you in her own country, that helps my career and you’re never too old to be helped,” he added.

Thankful

Filipinos everywhere now know who Charice is and they have been following her every career move ever since she made it to their collective consciousness. They are thankful to people who were instrumental in giving the young singer a break.

Foster is considered by many as one of the industry bigwigs who gave Charice a chance to show her talent to the world. For him, he was just doing his job as a discoverer of talent and a music producer.

“Everywhere I go, no matter what city I am in, anywhere in America, Filipinos come up to me. Just yesterday, checking in the hotel, this man brings my bags to me. His name is Henry and he says ‘Thank you,’ so I told him he brought my bags, I should be the one thanking him. He says, “No, thank you for bringing Charice to the world,” he recalled.

He is not taking credit for what Charice has become and what she might become. He is just happy to be a part of her journey to fame. He is contented watching in the sidelines as the young singer realizes her dreams.

“Of course it is Oprah that really brought Charice to the world, not me, but I am thrilled to be a part of it,” he said, “In a way, she’s helping me too, because I still have dreams. You don’t stop dreaming just because you’re 59 years old. I want to be dreaming when I’m 80 about things that I have yet to do. So, thank you Charice for helping promote me in the Philippines.”

God Bless America

At the pre-inauguration parties where she was invited to perform early this year, Charice sang a special arrangement of God Bless America. First at the Realizing the Dream awards gala celebrating the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and second at the Pearl Presidential Inaugural Gala, the event staged by a veritable who’s who in the Asian American community.

Foster shared that he patterned the arrangement after Celine Dion’s performance of the song post-9/11, the concert for New York City a few days after the terrorist attacks happened.

At first, he found it strange that they were asked to collaborate on the song.

“Strange, since Celine and I —both being Canadians, were asked to do an American anthem. I put a pressure on myself because this is a unique moment in history, like what we are seeing again this week, but for a very tragic, not hopeful reason. I have to take special care of this song and make sure that it touches people the right way and not the wrong way,” he explained.

Foster reworked the arrangement to make sure that at the song’s end, it went inward. “Typically, my stuff is overproduced and I go big in the money notes and there’s the big ending and all that. But this time, I thought it would be better if the song ended quietly and that’s exactly what it does. It has a beautiful and calming effect on people,” he said.

Charice, as expected, hit all the high notes, delivered performances worthy of standing ovations and captured the emotions necessary to convey the song’s message of hope.

“I just saw a tape of Charice singing it and of course she blew it out of the water like she does every time. She’s amazing,” Foster remarked.

Foster immediately flew home to Los Angeles after this short stint in Washington, DC. He says he has a very busy year ahead of him.

He is writing a Broadway musical called Betty Boop, which will be mounted in 2011. He is also working on Michael Bublé’s upcoming Crazy Love CD . He is likewise producing an album for Catherine Jenkins, a singer from the UK. Of course, he has his hands full as he is also producing the album of Charice, who received five standing ovations during her recent performance in Las Vegas.

He is also scheduled to visit Manila next year.

“I think I’m supposed to go to the Philippines, and I am excited. You know what I love about Filipinos? They feel and they know that the person on the back of the album cover, that name was just as important as the person on the cover. That you got to love: that they would think that the producer or the writer is as important as the artist. How could I argue with that?,” he asked.

Foster has the faintest idea that he is somehow famous in the Philippines—a country of music-lovers—because of his impressive body of work. With a little help from Charice, well, he got a little bit more famous than before.

During our casual talk, he mentioned, “If I earned a dollar for every Filipino who has approached and thanked me for what I have done for Charice, I’d probably be a millionaire now.”

David Foster would surely be a millionaire many times over when he gets to visit the homeland of Charice next year as the country of 90 million people waits in anticipation of his arrival.

(The l0-city tour of “David Foster and Friends” will start in Chicago on October 21. East Coast fans will have a chance to catch the show on Friday, Oct. 23 at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden; on Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and on Sunday, Oct. 25 at the Agganis Arena in Boston. ARNEL PINEDA

5

Arnel is an awesome singer and Filipinos are proud to him as their own. Imagine, a Pinoy who can make it big in the international stage is an outstanding accomplishment. Arnel is like living a dream and that dream is so real. More power to Arnel, Charice, Martin and other Filipino international singers who continue to bring to the Pinoy nation pride and hope.

I say to Freddie Aguilar to try to emulate Arnel and others who make it big in the international arena. Sometime you have to chose your path in going to stardom but sometimes you have to be chosen like what happened to Arnel being auditioned by Journey and successfully delivered. Arnel, Charice and Gary deserve apology from Freddie Aguilar for calling them name which was full of jealousy and mockery.

GO Pinoys!!!

Go Arnel and Charice make Filipinos proud,, show the world what great talents Filipinos have... Despite of hardships that Filipinos encounter when we hear news like this, it overwhelms us and it gives us reason to be proud as a Filipino...I believe that there are so many talented Filipinos especially in singing, the government just doesn't have a good program to enhance each Filipinos talents and intelligence.
It was a dream before to reach Hollywood scene, now that impossible dream is nearing to reality..
