Kris marks Ninoy, Cory's wedding anniversary
MANILA – Television host Kris Aquino on Sunday broke down in tears as her weekly entertainment program, “The Buzz,” paid tribute to her parents for their 55th wedding anniversary.
Slain former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and the late former president Corazon Aquino got married on Oct. 11, 1954.
"The Buzz" flashed photos of the young Cory and Ninoy during their wedding day.
“I don’t think my dad could have become the man he became and the hero for all of us if he didn’t have a wife like my mom. And… my mom would never have become the symbol of democracy for our country kung hindi siya naging asawa ni Ninoy Aquino,” Kris said.
“Finally, they'd be together in their wedding anniversary,” Kris added. “No matter how much we missed our parents, knowing that they’re together now, gives us some measure of comfort.”
As what they had promised when their mom was still alive, the youngest child of Ninoy and Cory said she and her four siblings, including Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, are looking after each other.
"The Buzz" host said it would “always be the biggest privilege” to have had parents like them.
She also thanked Filipinos for their continued love and respect for her parents.
In 1983, Ninoy, a staunch critic of the late president Ferdinand Marcos, was assassinated upon returning home from exile in the United States. His death catapulted Cory to the limelight and subsequently to the presidency.
Cory was propelled to the Philippines presidency in the “People Power” revolution in 1986.
For three days in February of that year, the world watched as the woman in a bright yellow dress led millions in a peaceful uprising that toppled Marcos, who had ruled with an iron fist for two decades.
During the next six years, Cory -- a devout Roman Catholic – led the restoration of democracy and changed the country's Constitution.
