MANILA, Philippines - Unitel Entertainment's film titled "The Red Shoes" starring actress-singer Nikki Gil and Marvin Agustin was chosen as one of the Best Picture winners at the 27th Bogota Film Festival.

The film festival was held in the Colombian capital from September 29 to October 7. The movie received the Jurors Recognition Award.

"The Red Shoes" was the only Asian film among the 16 films competing in the festival. The other film entries were from the US, Finland, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua.

According to Philippine Ambassador to Brazil and non-resident Ambassador to Colombia Eva Betita, the honor given to "The Red Shoes" is a milestone not only for its producer Unitel Entertainment, but also for Philippine cinema in general, which is steadily gaining popularity in South America.

"The Red Shoes" tells the story of Lucas Munozca (played by Agustin) who, as a 10-year-old boy, took a pair of red high heels from an exhibition of the thousands of shoes belonging to former First Lady Imelda Marcos. A few years later, he gave the shoes to his girlfriend Bettina (played by Gil) who belongs to a well-off family.

The stolen pair of shoes is the focal point of the story of his youth, family life, career and enduring love for a childhood friend.

Directed by Raul Jorolan, the film had James Ladioray as scriptwriter.

The 27th Bogota Film Festival is the first international competition to present the movie, and is among the biggest and most important film festivals in South America.

Aside from the Bogota Film Festival recognition, the film is also nominated for the Best Film category in the 1st Vietnam International Film Festival. Furthermore, Gil is also among the Best Actress nominees in the same festival.

The actress will be leaving for Vietnam on October 19 for the awards night to be held on October 21.

“The Red Shoes” also received a Special Citation for Feature in the 32nd Catholic Mass Media Awards.
