Amid recovery, Kim Atienza gives televised message
MANILA -- "It's Showtime" co-host and "TV Patrol" weatherman Kim Atienza greeted his colleagues on the noontime program, as well as its viewers, in a taped video aired Thursday amid his recovery from a rare disorder.
The 46-year-old host's surprise greeting was shown during Vice Ganda's special number, which Atienza was supposed to be part of had it not been for his condition.
Atienza has been diagnosed with Guillain Barre syndrome after feeling that his legs had gotten weak. This prompted his recent hospitalization.
According WebMD, Guillain Barre syndrome is "a rare, rapidly progressive disorder that consists of inflammation of the nerves (polyneuritis) causing muscle weakness, sometimes progressing to complete paralysis."
Although the precise cause of the disease is unknown, the medical website said a viral or respiratory infection usually precedes the onset of the syndrome. "This has led to the theory that GBS may be an autoimmune disease (caused by the body's own immune system)," it said.
On Monday, Atienza took to Twitter to share he had been discharged from the hospital, saying he is "almost 100% back."
'Para sa'yo 'to'
In his taped greeting aired Thursday, Atienza said he was hoping to join Vice Ganda in their joint number, "pero talagang hindi pwede dahil nagpapalakas pa tayo."
After his applauded acrobatic performance on Thursday, Vice Ganda said his team-up with Atienza was originally planned to feature the "Matangalwin" host wearing a tangga swimsuit in a Mardi Gras-inspired number.
Maraming, maraming salamat," Vice Ganda said.
The co-hosts' special numbers are part of the fourth "Magpasikat Week," an annual tradition on "It's Showtime" where the winning team wins P100,000 for their chosen charity.
