Why people are talking about Ka Freddie and his GF
Expert weighs in on Freddie's 'offensive' love affair
MANILA -- Why is the relationship of music icon Freddie Aguilar with a 16-year-old girl drawing criticisms from the public?
In an interview with radio dzMM on Thursday, family law expert Amy Avellano explained that many people could have felt "offended" by the 60-year-old Aguilar going public with his relationship with a minor.
"Hindi naman natin pinagbabawalang magmahal ka ng isang tao pero tingin ko ang nakaka-offend lang siguro...is the fact that she's a 16-year-old girl and that parang pinayagan yata ng magulang na mag-live in sila," she said.
"Siguro shocking yun sa iba that do you really have to announce that publicly? Marami tuloy ngayon ang bumabatikos pati sa mga magulang, anong ginagawa nila, ba't hinayaan na sumama itong anak nila kay Freddie Aguilar?" she added.
Aguilar's girlfriend, in an interview with ABS-CBN News' Mario Dumaual last week, said they first met during an election campaign concert in Oriental Mindoro, where the "Anak" hitmaker gave her his calling card.
The girl, who admitted she was the first to contact Aguilar days after that, later agreed to meet with the singer in Manila.
She said she stayed in Aguilar's house for 12 days.
Upon returning home in the province, the girl then asked permission from her mother that she be allowed to return to Manila to reunite with Aguilar. Her mother eventually agreed.
'We tend to be protective'
While clarifying that she is not passing any judgment on Aguilar, his girlfriend and her parents, Avellano said they should all understand why many people have been criticizing their relationship.
"Napaka-protective natin sa mga anak natin...hangga't di tumutungtong ng 18 ang isang bata, babae man yan o lalaki, we tend to be very very protective," she explained.
"Kung anak mo yun, tingin mo ba hindi ka mako-concern? Tingin ko yun ang reason kung bakit nako-concern lahat ng tao."
"Bilang magulang, nasaan ka nung panahong nagde-desiyon ang anak mo? Bakit mo kinunsinteng sumama ang anak mo sa isang 60-year-old man? Do you think may future pa siya with a 60-year-old man?" she continued.
Avellano also said that many could have been shocked by Aguilar's revelation, noting that he is a well-respected personality in the music industry.
On Thursday, qualified seduction charges were filed against Aguilar by Atty. Fernando Perito, a member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, before the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office.
In his two-page complaint, Perito said he is "angered, offended and scandalized" by Aguilar going public with his relationship.
He also called Aguilar a "sex-hungry child predator" and a "cradle snatcher," who he believes to be merely sexually attracted to his teen girlfriend.
Aguilar, for his part, said he is ready to face the charges. "Kung hindi ko haharapin yan, parang tinanggap ko na tama yung ginagawa nila," he said.
