'Darna' steals spotlight at 'Pinoy Big Brother' auditions
MANILA - Thousands of teenagers trooped to the Abreeza Mall in Davao City Saturday for the first round of auditions of the fifth season of "Pinoy Big Brother (PBB)," the pioneering reality TV show in the Philippines.
Armed with guitars, talent, confidence and wit, the teen hopefuls braved the late hours of night for the chance to be named as one of the lucky housemates.
"Gusto ko lang po talaga pumasok sa 'PBB' at mag-audition," said one teenager who was at the venue as early as 11 p.m. on Friday. "Wala po akong kaalam-alam kung paano pumunta dito, pero ginawa ko po lahat. Nagtanung-tanong po ako kahit mag-isa lang ako para at least, maka-audition ako ngayon."
Some, in addition to being hours early, even traveled from other parts of the country.
Israel from Cotabato and Israel from Cagayan De Oro, coincidentally, were the first two in line for the auditions. Both, who didn't know each other, traveled more than 7 and a half hours just to audition.
But it would take more than just being early and their willingness to fall in line to catch the attention of "Big Brother" or "Kuya."
So others decided to step it up, showing off their ballroom dancing skills, or, in a unique case, a bright red "Darna" costume.
Ranya, who charmed others with her playful attitude dressed as the iconic Pinoy komikshero, hopes that Kuya will take notice and eventually welcome her to the famous yellow house facing the ABS-CBN compound.
"Sentimental po 'tong role na to sa akin," Ranya said of coming to the audition as Darna. "Dahil sa school, tinatawag na nila akong Darna dahil nung nag-cosplay kami sa school, ito na yung ginamit ko. Mga iba nag-cosplay na foreign, and then ako lang 'yung local kaya ako lang napansin."
Comedian Ruben Gonzaga was also spotted at the audition venue to throw support behind the aspiring teen housemates. Born in Davao, Gonzaga won the 2nd Celebrity Edition of "PBB."
The next batch of auditions would be for those age 18 to 36 years old and will be held Sunday, also at Abreeza Mall, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
