Cousin behind slay try on Angelika dela Cruz?
MANILA -- The two rivals of Angelika dela Cruz running for barangay captain of Longos in Malabon City are not "starstruck" with the actress.
Dela Cruz is running for the first time after her father, Longos Barangay Captain Ernesto dela Cruz, was suspended last month for "slight physical injuries and maltreatment."
Acting Barangay Capt. Jojo Alvarez, one of the actress' rivals, filed the case after Ernesto reportedly tried to strangle him inside the barangay hall in November 2011.
Alvarez said he was surprised by the incident and said it was caused by a misunderstanding on Facebook.
"Hindi ito pelikula. Ito ay public service," he said.
Ernesto refused to comment on the record, but off camera he told ABS-CBN News that Alvarez also tried to poke his butt.
The actress said everyone knows her father is gay.
Alvarez, however, denied the incident happened. "Walang katotohanan. Kung nanundot ako, 'di ba sya dapat ang nandito?" he asked.
Meanwhile, the third person running for barangay captain is Angelika's first cousin, Ruel Santos.
Santos allegedly had something to do with last Saturday's attempt on the actress' life when a man suddenly appeared with a knife with the intention of stabbing her while she was campaigning.
Angelika said she is still traumatized by the attempt on her life.
Santos, who was linked to the incident because the suspect was wearing his campaign t-shirt, denied having a hand in the slay attempt.
"Ang t-shirt pinamimigay. Kailangan pa ba magsuot ka ng t-shirt para gawin 'yun?” he asked.
He also said it's impossible for him to do such things and expressed sympathy to the person who allegedly tried to stab Angelika after he was mobbed and hospitalized for his injuries.
Angelika said she feels "weird" running against a first cousin.
"Nakakasama ng loob. Pangit ang ganun, wala ka ng magagawa, it is what it is," she said.
Barangay Longos in Malabon has about 23,000 registered voters and has an internal revenue allotment worth P23 million.
