'Be Careful With My Heart' tackles sex, infidelity
MANILA -- The "kilig-serye" starring Jodi Sta. Maria and Richard Yap shifted gear in its recent episodes as it tackled adult topics, including sex and infidelity.
In the episode of "Be Careful With My Heart" aired October 28, Maya (Sta. Maria) and Ricky (Richard Yap) awkwardly discuss the subject of intimacy as part of their premarital counseling.
"It's just an expression of how you passionately feel about someone," Ricky tells Maya, who appears to be avoiding the topic.
"Like when you love someone so much, words are not enough to express how much you feel. It's spontaneous, just like how I kissed you after the prom, or when you kissed me in front of Corrine the other day," he says, referring to their wedding planner.
Maya, a 26-year-old virgin, then seeks the advice her mother. Teresita (Sylvia Sanchez) reminds her eldest daughter of Ricky' sincerity in explaining that a relationship between a couple does not solely revolve around sex.
"Maya, anak, huminahon ka," Teresita says. "Mahal ka ni Richard, at hindi naka-base lang doon ang pagmamahal niya sa'yo. Kilalang-kilala ka niya, at alam niyang bago sa'yo ang lahat ng mga bagay-bagay na 'to."
'Why do men cheat?'
In an earlier episode of "Be Careful With My Heart" aired last October 22, Maya and Ricky are also seen discussing infidelity, which is prompted by Ricky's sharing of a colleague's experience.
"Bakit nambabae ang mga lalaki?" Maya asks her fiancee.
"Iba-iba 'yung reasons eh," Ricky answers. "For some, it's their character. Sa iba naman, it's because they've fallen out of love with their partners. Pero usually, it's temptation. Natukso."
"To be fair, hindi lang naman lalaki ang nag-tsi-cheat. Mas nakakatakot nga pag babae ang nag-cheat, because usually it means they've fallen out of love with their partners, or na-inlove na sila sa iba.
"It's not like the guys na usually purely physical lang. They find somebody attractive, and then she flirts with you, you flirt with her, gano'n lang. Pero it doesn't mean that you love her," he says.
Maya responds by mentioning the case of her parents. She wonders whether the reason why her father, Arturo (Lito Pimentel), left his family was so grave he had to separate from her mother for good.
The couple's first-time discussions of these topics come weeks before their wedding, which, according to the series' teasers, will air on November 15.
Directed by Jeffrey Jeturian and Mervyn Brondial, the "kilig-serye" initially centered on Maya as a bario lass with dreams of becoming a flight attendant, and her misadventure in Manila which led to her becoming a nanny of Richard's children.
Over its year-long run, "Be Careful With My Heart" has seen the development of its lead characters, with Maya achieving her dream and Richard finally easing up his stoic front after his wife's death.
"Be Careful With My Heart" airs weekdays after "Minute to Win It" on ABS-CBN.
