“Imburnal,” the controversial Cinema One Originals winning entry by Sherad Anthony Sanchez, is set to finally be shown at the UP Film Institute Cine Adarna uncensored.

The film showing is scheduled at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The film, which tells a coming-of-age story of a boy, was initially classified by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) unfit for public exhibition, citing “objectionable scenes.”

The film tackles on the outset desaparecidos and political killings, issues that have been plaguing the government.

Imburnal won the Lino Brocka Grand Prize in Cinemanila’s Digital Lokal competition.

Following the MTRCB’s decision, the film was not shown during the recently concluded Cinemanila International Film Festival at the Gateway Mall in Cubao last month despite appeals from event organizer Tikoy Aguiluz to reconsider its decision.

Mario Hernando, one of the board members of MTRCB and a Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino member, said, of the three who reviewed the film, two of them gave the movie an X rating.

“I settled for an R-18 but I was overruled,” Hernando said.

The re-edited version of the film got an R-13. Cinema One head Ronald Arguelles said there is a new version of the movie, with some scenes deleted, for general patronage.

“But we are showing the film in its entirety at UP and I hope, the public will love it,” said Arguelles.
