Bandila, Martes, Agosto 18, 2009

26 long years ago After I

26 long years ago
After I have shed the last drop of my blood,
In that glory day of August 21,
I faced my Creator with an overwhelming pride
Within my heart

Lord, I said.
I have done my share,
I have sacrificed my life so my people may live in lasting peace,

Go back, He said.
Look at your country and your people today,
And see how they made a mockery of what you have died for.

And so, my dear kababayans,
I came back today not as a living mass,
But as a transient ghost,
And this is my story.

My wife Corazon, my family and I
Were sent to exile to the dream land,
Where I took the opportunity to gain more
Strength to fight again for the freedom I’ve been crying for.

The first thing I desired when I felt strong enough,
Was to go back to my mother land, despite the eminent danger of life,
And there I shall begin to fight the tyrant conjugal dictators
And to die if need be for a free and democratic way of life.

And as bravely set my few steps on the tarmac,
I heard a deafening shot behind me,
And I felt an excruciating pain runs trough my body,
As I fell down to kiss my Beloved Land and whispered
“The Filipinos are worth dying for”
And then everything went blank.

Today, as I tried to observe things around me,
Pride swells my heart, for I could see my people
Are again clenching their fist and marching on the streets,
I could see them bravely and aired their voices freely.

I could my peers in the media are covering every events
And criticizing every abuse and excesses of our leaders
I could see their vigilance to guard the freedom and democracy
That many have died for.

But as I looked and listened more closely,
blood freezes within my heart.
For I could see my people are marching not on their free will
I could hear them shouting not from their own voices
Rather for the voice and ill-will of few people
Who are hungry of power and with hidden agenda.

I could see my peers in the media are being paid for
By every hooks and crooks in the name of Free Press.
I could see my peers are being used by individuals
To advance their own political interest,
In the guise of freedom of expression.

This is not the kind of democracy that I longed and died for.

In sheer desperation I hurried back to my creator and cried out.

Lord, Forgive Them for They Know Not What They Do.
