Abs-cbnNEWS.com's David Chavez Dizon won best news reportage for the print and online category in the 4th PopDev Media awards.
Dizon, sub-editor of abs-cbnNEWS.com, won based on three news articles, namely:
- "Low awareness of contraceptives plagues 3 RP provinces"; (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/lifestyle/07/11/08/low-awareness-contraceptives-plagues-3-rp-provinces)
- "Study: Moms prefer home births in Western Samar, 2 other provinces" (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/06/27/08/study-moms-prefer-home-births-western-samar-2-other-provinces)
- "Experts belie Arroyo's claim on impact of natural birth control"; (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/07/31/08/experts-belie-arroyos-claim-impact-natural-birth-control)
Dizon's entry was among 406 submissions that were blinded for anonymity and initially evaluated by a screening committee. The top three to five entries were then submitted to the board of judges for the print and online category. The final line-up of winners was determined on November 7, 2008.
Jaileen Jimeno of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) was runner-up in the Best News Reportage (Print and Online Category) for the articles: “Low investment in education consigns millions to illiteracy”; “Arroyo urged to adopt coherent national population policy”; and “RP failing in ‘gut-level’ MDG indicators-ADB."
The Best Investigative Report went to Sun Star Cebu's four-part series on "Squatters and the City".
Runners-up in the Best Investigative Report were: a three-part series by PCIJ's Karon Anne Ilagan and Jaileen Jimeno on education reforms; and, PCIJ Alecks Pabico's two-part series on the cheaper medicines law.
The best opinion/editorial piece went to The Mindanano Times' Rene Ezpeleta Bartolo's, "The Seesaw for survival."
Runners-up were Sun Star Cebu's Mayette Q. Tabada's "What a woman can expect," and Mindanao Times' Rene Ezpeleta Bartolo's "Hunger".
Best feature or magazine article went to PCIJ's Isa Lorenzo's "A Feminine Challenge." Runners-up were Rosanna Harper Alonso's "Touring the Past, shaping the Future" for the Women's Feature-Service Philippines, and Solita 'Winnie' Monsod's "Tracking the Women's Journey" written for PCIJ.
The board of judges for the print and online category were:
- Prof. Danilo Arao, assistant professor of journalism at the UP College of Mass Communication;
- Rina Jimenez David, columnist of the Philippine Daily Inquirer;
- Dr. Alejandro Herrin, professor of the UP School of Economics;
- Abraham Olandres, professional blogger, http://www.yugatech.com
The Annual PopDev Media Awards was conceived in 2005 to pay tribute to outstanding and responsible journalism on population and development during the year. It is spearheaded by the Philippine Legislators' Committee on Population and Development Foundation (PLCPD), a non-stock, non-profit organization composed of legislators from both the Senate and House of Representatives working for responsive population and human development policies through legislative advocacy.
Now on its fourth year, the Awards is being conducted with the support of the United Nations Population Fund and organizations that are experts in the field of population and development, and in journalism.
The winners will be awarded this November 25 at the Mandarin Oriental Suites, Gateway Mall, Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City. The awards night will be attended by members of Congress, government officials, non-government organizations, media organizations, business groups and members of the international development community.
