If the UAAP was a warzone, then the annual Cheerdance Competition would be the equivalent of armies chanting battle cries before beating each other senseless.

Review: One rocking night with Avril

Usual Wednesday morning. Workday. I really had nothing exciting to look forward to. Not until my officemate told me as soon as I arrive at the office that she has 2 tickets for the Avril Lavigne concert.

After Katrina, Gustav: caught up in the cone of uncertainty

August 25 was supposed to be a usual Monday morning. I normally wake up at 5:30 a.m. for my morning devotion. While making coffee, I watch the weather channel. The chief meteorologist was explaining the projected path of hurricane Gustav and there was New Orleans right in the middle of the cone. All the memories of Katrina and the challenge of rebuilding the past three years flashed back in my mind.

Unerasable: Life and love in the eternal circus of rocking youth

That this unexpected turn was a bitter disappointment to some quarters of the crowd would be quite an understatement; yes, the event organizers did outwardly announce that Buendia's life was in danger even while fans were salivating for the concluding portion of the show, but this was totally lost on some inflamed youths, who shouted vitriolic epithets to the effect that Ely Buendia should pay the ultimate price for forsaking his duty to the concert goers and should just...well, expire would be the kindest word for it.

The Gates to Heroism: Defining a Filipino Hero

The essence of the word “hero” is past declining, today one need not to die or do such gallant act to be given the noble title or that some just won a boxing match. Time has really evolved and so does our standard in defining a Filipino hero. Will our forefathers who gave their lives for freedom feel insulted for this? Are these the Filipinos we’ll look up to for guidance through the times, aren’t our children losing the true meaning of heroism by our doings? All these things we should ask ourselves before giving the title “hero” to anyone.

North Cotabato refugees frightened to return home as new crisis erupts in Lanao Norte

In this Muslim-dominated region that has seen four wars since the late 1990s, thousands of homes in isolated villages await the return of their owners. For the moment at least, though fighting has flared up to the north of the region in Lanao Del Norte, the guns of war have fallen silent here.
