Ladlad needs no representation in congress because its constituents are not marginalized. On the contrary, gays of all sizes and shapes are enjoying recognition and power in our tolerant and democratic society. You only need to switch on your television and chances are you will be greeted or entertained either by a professional Kapamilya or a Kapuso gay comedian or host, not to mention the gays behind the cameras like directors, managers, and talent agent.
What is television if there are no gays? It will be void of color and controversy. Then you get the broadsheets and you will be reading the opinions of gay entertainment and style writers. Fact is, even straight celebrities enjoy playing and acting gays.
In addition, there are well-respected gays in the fashion, design, and theatrical industry. Those who feel they’re objects of ridicule and discrimination need only the advice, the moral and financial support of the wealthy members of their “confederacion”, and mind you, there are not a few of them. In other words, in every field of profession, there is always a gay making a difference in our lives: gay doctors, teachers, lawyers, soldiers, gay chefs, even gay politicians.
Truth is, gays have become so influential and empowered that they have already invented their own gay lingo. So, what else do these Filipinos want? More money? Believe me, in our country, if you are not straight, you already have the edge in any endeavor you take. You don’t need a party-list rep to improve your lot and make you succeed.
