Bar 6th placer gets car from university
MANILA - Manuel Sarausad seems to have hit the jackpot - twice in one day.
Apart from placing sixth in the 2013 Bar exams, the University of Cebu graduate will also drive home a brand new Toyota.
Candice Gotianuy, chancellor of the University of Cebu, said Sarausad can have the car by tomorrow. It's an incentive the university dangles in front of students every year.
"We really want them to do well. The car is our way of encouraging them to excel, " explained Gotianuy.
"The University of Cebu gifts all bar topnotchers with a car."
The dean of the Law School, Atty. Baldomero Estenzo, said he is not surprised Sarausad placed sixth.
"He's really a good student," Estenzo said. But he's extremely proud of Sarausad, one of the university's scholars.
He said odds are heavily stacked against students from the provinces.
"They have to worry about going to Manila, the living expenses, then they must deal with being away from their families," Estenzo explained.
In Sarausad's case, Estenzo said he had to leave his young family behind for two months to review and then take the exams.
The University of Cebu has been around for 50 years but the Law School was only established in 2002.
In the next 11 years, they produced two topnotchers, prompting Gotianuy to challenge the dean to snag a spot in the top ten this year.
"I told him I'd also give him a car if he can get us a topnotcher," Gotianuy said.
Estenzo did. And this week, he too will be driving home a brand new car.
