Aquino, Japanese PM to meet amid China tensions
MANILA - President Aquino will visit Tokyo and Hiroshima, Japan next week.
Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma said President Aquino will deliver the keynote address at the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) International Conference in Hiroshima next week.
Before heading for Hiroshima, the President and the Prime Minister will hold a summit meeting over lunch at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Tokyo.
After speaking in Hiroshima, the President will return home to Manila.
Malacanang could not yet say what will be the agenda of the summit meeting between the 2 leaders.
"In accordance with diplomatic practice, we will have to await a statement from the Department of Foreign Affairs because matters like this are published or made known to the public on the mutual consent of both parties. So we are still awaiting further information on the agenda for the meeting," he said.
The meeting comes amid tensions between the Philippines and China and Japan and China over the west Philippine Sea in Japan. Both are treaty allies of the United States.
Meantime, Coloma could not comment on JICA's formal recommendation of Sangley Point as the country’s next airport.
"We will await the recommendation of the Department of Transportation and Communications," he said.
