MANILA - The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will expand its probe into the killing of Ozamis robbery-holdup gang leader Ricky Cadavero last July 15.
Justice Secretary Leila De Lima said Cadavero's slay may be related to the recapture of drug convict Jackson Dy.
Cadavero was recaptured by policemen on the morning of July 12; Jackson Dy was also recaptured on the evening of the same day.
An ABS-CBN report quoted a witness as saying that elements of the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group pocketed illegal drugs and millions of pesos during Dy's arrest in San Juan.
Cadavero was killed in a supposed ambush try at around 6:30 pm on July 15 in San Pedro, Laguna as he was being escorted by a police convoy from attending inquest proceedings in Cavite.
"Hindi lang pala ang Cadavero incident ang titingnan ng NBI ngayon, maski na rin yung circumstances surrounding Jackson Dy and surrounding the re-arrest of Jackson Dy,"De Lima said.
"We have reason to believe, based on credible sources, na related yan," she added.
De Lima said two witnesses to Dy's recapture are now under the Department of Justice's (DOJ) Witness Protection Program (WPP). These witnesses allegedly narrated how operatives from the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) "cleaned up" the place where the arrest took place.
"Bago dumating ang media alas dos ay nilinis yung lugar, may mga kinuha - mga alleged drug paraphernalia at cash sa sako... yung sasakyan ng operatiba, nung ready na, inarrange yung mga yun, pinasok nung isa."
"Dun daw nila nilagay mga paraphernalia at yung pera, tapos umalis," De Lima said.
Dy was allegedly "snatched" by members of Cadavero's Ozamis gang in February while being escorted by jail guards on his way to a hearing in Cavite.
